Re: Missing University of Utah Student

She wasn't an inexperienced teenager. She knew she was pursuing something illicit which is the reason she kept it from her friends and family. The meeting at the park should have warned her against going. Had she seen the house, she would not have gotten out of the car and he knew it.

Once she was in his control, her only choice to survive was to go along rather than resist. The neighbors said women came and went from the house regularly so I don't think he planned to kill her. The late night burning, the record of her contacting him from the airport indicates that he had no plan to dispose of her body nor did he use a burner phone to conceal his identity.

Well, I'd never read your story before so it was very interesting to me.....and terribly frightening.

A different time for sure, but I'm glad your good sense kicked in and you left.

Listen, I can think of 15 different foolish/risky things I did in my youth that now scare the heck out of me.   I mean some seriously STUPID things.

Here I am, like you, lived to tell about it.

Now, I am suspicious of almost everything!

I doubt this was a sugar daddy situation, although she stated on her social media that she had two sugar daddys.  This guy didn't have any money.  He doesn't live in an expensive area and he rents out his one bedroom basement as an air bnb.  I'm wondering if it wasn't more like s&m thing.  More investigating will be done.

@Scooby Doo. When you ‘meet a man’ on a website where he tells you his story about being rich etc. you don’t know until you meet him. If she hadn’t met him before, how would she know his living situation?

Exactly right.  When "meet" someone online, you only know what they want you to know.  People can and do pull pictures off the web and it doesn't take a lot of know how to create a fake life; with pictures of a fake luxurious and wealthy life style.  People fake homes, businesses, vacations.  They can be anything they want to be online.  If he did that and she was naive enough to believe it and if he was offering what she wanted....she wouldn't know she'd been duped until it was too late.

occasional rain,

I'm not sure I'd have the courage or presence of mind to do this, but I once read that if you are abducted or you sense you are about to be killed and you are still in a public area, you should yell and scream, making as much noise as possible in order to get the attention of somebody.  Anybody.

The source (I believe it was law enforcement) granted that you could be killed or severely injured following your outburst, but your body, dead or injured, would be found easily.  Makes sense to me.  If it ever happened to me, I hope I scream bloody murder.

The advice went on to say that it is better to resist and face harm than to be taken somewhere that only the perpetrator knows and perhaps never found.  I fully agree.  I only hope that I would be brave enought to yell.

I wonder if Ms. Lueck was subdued by the time she arrived at the home of her killer.  Had she kicked and screamed leaving the car, certainly one of the neighbors (they were close by in that neighborhood, as I saw on the news) would have taken action.

That is true.  I took women's self defense class about 20 years ago and that's what we were taught.  Don't go along with it.  Yell, scream, kick bite, spit, go for his eyes.  And make a lot of noise!!!  We have take one of those workplace shooter courses at work every year and they tell us the same thing.  Don't cower in a corner and make a victim of yourself.  Band together as a group and attack.  Throw things, yell scream.  Your chances of surviving are many times greater if the group goes on the attack then if they run or cower.  The sad act is that too women, even in the most dire of circumstances, don't like to draw attention to themselves and they won't fight back.  They tend to believe the  utterly ridiculous  "do what I tell you and I won't hurt you".

Re: Missing University of Utah Student

This new information coming out, this reminds me of the case of a woman who left home to meet a man she met online who called himself Slavemaster. She thought she was going there to have a consensual S&M relationship but instead he killed her, and she wasn't his first victim.

If Mackenzie was on sugar daddy sites as an adult that's her business, no shame in it IMO, but personally I've always been leery of online dating and don't use relationship apps or websites. I know many have found success with it but unfortunately for me I've attracted weirdos in the past so for me better safe than sorry. (I know you can attract weirdos in person too, but online can be more dangerous).

Chrystaltree,

I've never taken a self-defense class, but from what you wrote, it sounds like something every woman should take.  Even though no one would want to haul off my old heavy butt for la-dee-da, I might be attacked for another reason.

In this day and age, it is probably more important than ever to know the tricks of defending oneself.  Strangers from the Internet, shooters, regular-guy rapists.  They are out there.

Recently I was grumbling about my weight, and an old friend remarked, "There's one good thing about it."  I asked what that good thing was.  He said that heavy people are less likely to be abducted.  So, there you have it.  If you are heavy, they cannot overwhelm you as easily as they can a lighter-weight individual and haul you off.

Bring on the ice cream!

Re: Missing University of Utah Student

A few years or so ago, I heard somewhere, probably on TV, that some college student women do act as 'escorts' and make extra money that way.

I'm only hoping that the clients are being screened by, say, a madam (or whatever they're called).

It's a big mistake to 'go out there on your own', imo.

'More or less', 'Right or wrong', 'In general', and 'Just thinking out loud ' (as usual).

@occasionalrainI'll start by saying I haven't seen or heard any real details about this story.  I know she was missing, last photos, and then this arrest.

Was there something odd about the house that she wouldn't have gotten out of the car if she'd seen it?  Something visible?  If he was renting the bottom as a bnb, it couldn't have been too strange.

Also, maybe the women that came and went were there for bnb stays.

I feel the most sympathy for her family.  If they didn't really know their daughter and her secret/alternate life, they may be suffering humiliation in addition to grief.

One sugar daddy...I get that.  More than one...that's more like a self-employed escort.  IMO.

Re: Missing University of Utah Student

If she was interested in sugar daddys, wealthy men, the house would make clear that this man was anything but wealthy. Screaming, if she were able, would not have gotten her help, the neighbors didn't report the late night fire or all the women coming and going. At that hour neighbors would have been in bed and by the time her screams woke them and they looked out she would have been inside and probably unconscious.

This wasn't online dating. First dates are meeting at a restaurant  or coffee shop not out in a park after midnight.
