She is certainly beautiful, but I never watch these pageants. I think they belong in the past. We don't need any more objectifying of women, no matter how bright these contestants might (or might not) be.

I used to feel that way too but honesty, watching and listening to the beautiful and accomplished women last night changed my mind somewhat. They all have done wonderful things and have way more to offer than their beauty. Why not use all of their gifts and avenues to accomplish the things in life that they seek?
Then why do they need beauty contests? They can be just as accomplished without having their conformation rated in a swimsuit like in a horse show. It's a relic of the olden days. More pointless these days than outrageous, in my opinion.
Exactly. Even Victoria's Secret execs recognized how dated and inappropriate their horse show was and had the brains to discontinue it.

@newname0 She is stunning. I'm very happy for her. The women in Africa have everything going against them. At least this will be a platform for her to bring so many atrocities to light in the world.
I hope she will use her new fame for good.

I'm not a beauty pageant fan, I don't think it furthers women quest for equality to parade around in swim suits and revealing gowns. There should be a Braniac Pageant where the women could show how smart and accomplished they they are, beauty aside.

That said, you would think at this point in time these ridiculous "beauty contests" would be a thing of the past.
...walking across the stage in swimsuits and high heels????
I HATE the message that this sends to young girls.
Whats wrong with being beautiful. If you were a genius you would flaunt your brain. Please , this is where parenting comes in. Explain looks aren't everything, but don't make the girl who is beautiful feel bad for letting it help her. Maybe thats her asset.

@willomenia, no one is blaming the women themselves but rather the outdated notion that they should be paraded around on stage like livestock. (hyperbole, I know.)
As for "Maybe that's her asset," what a sad statement.

My first thought was she looked like Jennifer Hudson
When I saw her beautiful face, I instantly thought of Jennifer Hudson also; another beautiful woman. GMTA😉

I find many of these criticisms of 'pageants' almost as dated as many posters find the pageants themselves... Last time I looked, pageants are elective. Young women are not forced to participate but choose do so for their own reasons. They are not the 'beauty' pageants of yesteryear and the focus is not exclusively on physical beauty. More to the point, even were it, physical beauty has always been and will always be celebrated and acknowledged, like it or not... I have no problem with them, although I don't usually opt to watch them as I don't find them of interest. As for the old 'cattle call' argument, that's hardly their draw. Anyone seeking to see scantily clad women parading around need no longer wait for the annual Miss Whatever pageant, when they can simply pull up a cable movie or go on-line...

I find it very sad that a woman would feel that it is necessary to put on a bathing suit and heels to be judged on body appearance to get ahead or some type of break.
What message does that send to a young girl when they see this on TV???
You are right, this is where good parenting should come in to make sure a young girl knows that she is worth so much more than that.
The pageants are something that should have been left in the 1950's or 1960's before we knew better.

@DereeSurely, you jest. That's the funniest thing I've read today. The Victoria's Secret cattle call wasn't dropped because of an epiphany by suddenly-enlightened "execs" who had "brains" to realize it was "dated and inappropriate." Rather, the ratings continued to tank, after-show sales didn't improve (the program was, after all, one big advertisement), and young women today aren't buying what VS is selling (whether that's product or image 🤔) in numbers necessary to support the brand.
But thanks for the laugh.
