Re: Minks dying of COVID-19 in Utah and Wisconsin

Here you go, @Mindy D. I just clicked on HTML above the writing area. And I went in there and deleted the extra HTML tags, particularly the one that created the spoiler.

Confirmed cases of SARS-CoV-2 in Animals in the United States

The table below lists cases of SAR-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19 in humans) in animals that have been confirmed by USDA’s National Veterinary Services Laboratories. Only the first animal of a species at a single facility, home or location will be reported in the table.

SARS-CoV-2 is considered to be an emerging disease by the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE). USDA must report confirmed animal infections in the United States to the OIE. We are still learning about the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes COVID-19 in people, but it appears that it can spread from people to animals in some situations. A small number of animals worldwide, have been reported to be infected with SARS-CoV-2, mostly after close contact with people with COVID-19. More information on COVID-19 can be found at: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/animals/pets-other-animals.html

I'm not certain from the scant research on this issue that humans ca not contract the virus from minks. Studying this issue in ferrets and minks should be a priority. We are still not  certain enough that the vector/ intermediate host for COVID-19 is a pangolin.

Both are sad, the mink farm, and that they are sick.

I live in N. WI. There used to be alot of mink farms in the Northern tier. This State is not doing well with Covid as of late. Thankfully our county's schools are well in my area.

It was on the news this week that Covid was found  in a small amount in Lake Superior. Funding help was going to cease.  It was able to continue to be reasearched through the University of Wisc. as deemed necessary.

Just to be clear, I read about that, and the Covid found in the water was viral remnants, not active virus that anyone could catch. Someone might read this and worry they could get infected from their tap water or from swimming, which is not a concern here.

It's important to study because the level in bodies of water can indicate how infected the nearby area is. And without adequate testing of individuals or contact tracing, we're flying blind right now.

It seems that the virus can go from mink to people - documented in Denmark.   If intereted you can google "mink mutation."

I just read an article yesterday about the thousands upon thousand of infected minks being slaughtered in Denmark and Spain. I thought, oh glad it's not here. Little did I know. Thanks for the info. Very sad and terrible all around.

@Grouchomarx

You might want to go back and edit that typo. Thousands of infected monks being slaughtered??? (Have to admit it made me smile, even tho this is no laughing matter.)

I wonder why they don't use the infected minks to study how the virus operates, test potential drugs, etc. considering their lungs are just as susceptible as humans?
