I have an old fashioned window unit in my bedroom.  I live in the PNW so it is not usually that hot but I use it in the summer to sleep.  If we have a heat wave (which seems to be happening more and more) I retire to my bedroom to read or watch TV.  90% of time I would not use central air.

@DiAnne I also live in the PNW. Last year we replaced our 30 year old electric furnace with a heat pump and new furnace.  Now we save so much money on our heating  and cooling costs. The heat pump is a heater and a air conditioner in one.  Best investment we ever made.  It pays for itself. You might consider this

Thanks I will have to look into that if the problem arises.

DH had a Mini-Split installed last week. it has AC and there is  a heat function and the condenser unit is outside. Virtually silent.  So much better than lugging up the two window AC units and the hearing the dull drone day and night.  warning the temp can get pretty frosty. i'm wearing PJs and a fleece robe right now.

Looking at the q&As and reviews on Amazon, why can't you take a cooler and fill it with ice and put it in front of a regular fan and get teh same thing?

I don't know what the OP is referring to either.  What is a mini air conditioner exactly?

It's a table top fan you put water in the base.  If you add ice it makes the breeze cooler.

We tried one last summer and it didn't work at all.   Sent it back.  Maybe other brands are better but this one was a bust.

@CatsyCline   Did you get just one unit for one room?

We looked into a similar unit to cool the entire house...We would need several (I think 2) units for outside and then a unit in each room upstairs.

We have ceiling heat so we have no duct work in the house.

thanks

@Mom2Dogs     the unit is 18000 BTU . The LR, Kitchen and DR get very cool amd comfortable and one bedroom. the other bedroom because its in a side hall not quite as chilly.  We have one floor, with an upstairs you would need an additional unit. We could have added a unit but we want to see what the electric bill looks like.

It is so quiet which i love because our window units were noisy and spiders would get in. It's a Mitsubishi.

@CatsyCline ....is your house open concept?   We do have a wall unit in the family room and it cools the kitchen/family room nicely, but it is noisy,  the noise drives me nuts.

Our house is not open concept, on the ground floor we also have a dining room and a living room, as well as small bath and laundry.

 All bedrooms are upstairs.

We go back and forth about what to do as far as air.  We will die in this house, not my choice but we have put a boat load of money into the house and would never get it back.  I'd like to have a condo but in my area, there are very few condos/townhouses.  The current prices on the available options is $250,000.....not spending that much!
