@Mom2Dogs wrote:@CatsyCline ....is your house open concept? We do have a wall unit in the family room and it cools the kitchen/family room nicely, but it is noisy, the noise drives me nuts.
Our house is not open concept, on the ground floor we also have a dining room and a living room, as well as small bath and laundry.
All bedrooms are upstairs.
We go back and forth about what to do as far as air. We will die in this house, not my choice but we have put a boat load of money into the house and would never get it back. I'd like to have a condo but in my area, there are very few condos/townhouses. The current prices on the available options is $250,000.....not spending that much!
@Mom2Dogs we have just regular 8ft ceilings, the house is about 1800sq ft and it is a ranch, one level. if we had a 2nd floor i guess we would have a 2nd unit. i think DH said there are units with connectors and there is a way to tie 2nd units in to the outside condenser.
the regular window units were so noisy i had to turn one off at night to sleep. they were in each separate bedroom window (north side of house) and when they were cranked up at the highest setting they did cool the house.
the mini-split is so much nicer, cools great, so quiet. there is the unit mounted on the wall but i hardly notice it, it's hard-wired so no ugly electrical cords. . they have ones you can mount in the ceiling that are recessed. the outside condenser heat pump thingy has a low profile
i had a townhouse with central AC and becuase of the vaulted ceilings the cool air went way up into the top floor and left warm air in the LR and kitchen. vaulted ceilings look nice but not great for cooling (or heating).
Hope this helps, i'll be happy to answer any questions ...

@CatsyCline Thanks for the detailed reply. It sounds like our houses have the same amount of square footage, except we have an upstairs. We might have to check into the units again.
We have a window unit in the bedroom, and it is getting almost to heavy for us to put in and take out every season. The unit downstairs is installed on the outside back wall of the family room....it's loud, drive me crazy.

@hennypenny I have been tempted after seeing all fo the ads. I could really use one for my sunroom, since that is where I have my art studio. It really gets warm in the afternoon. I like that they are small and will fit on a tabletop. I did forget to look when I was at Costco this past weekend, but I will take a look at BJ's and see if they have them.

@SXMGirl , Let me know, I am still tempted. If costco has then they would possibly be a go as they have good returns.
The advice I am getting here on the forum is to put it on a plate if we bite the bullet and get one.

@hennypenny I just checked both Costco and Bj's and neither have the mini air conditioners. Walmart has quite a few online, but the reviews are not great.
