On top of everything else it appears that Turkey is in the midst of a military coup.

Details are unfolding . . . .

@Snoopp I honestly had banned myself from the 24/7 news channels but after what happened in Nice it's hard to escape the coverage even on local channels.  I was stunned and saddened to see what was occurring on CNN in Turkey . . . God help us all.

I'm not up to date on Turkish politics.

Can someone please explain why the military coup is happening?

Thanks!

The group is claiming they are going to install rule of law and democracy.

@Plaid Pants2 to be honest, at this point I don't think any news outlet has any solid reporting as the situation is fluid.  Hopefully in a couple of hours we will know more.

So this coup is a good thing?

We should be rooting for the military?

Why would the citizens be against that?

I don't know enough about the group to say one way or the other. I think information is still very preliminary. Turkey does have a democratic government already, but I know that a faction of the military has not been happy with the president of Turkey since he took office which I think was over 10 years ago. And anyway, they have a divided parliamentary type government so the President doesn't have a lot of power anyway. The Prime Minister seems to have more power than the President.

It's hard to say, I mean look at Egypt, that doesn't seem to have been a positive step since their coup.
