Need to not say Happy with Memorial Day. Not an especially happy holiday for most. Altho my dad who fought in Korea did come home from it. And I was happy for that.

I tend to look for the intent behind what people say so I am not offended by the quote.  I guess I feel that whoever said this first.... meant no harm and wasn't thinking about it being offensive and just wanted to honor our veterans....which I am all for!

Also, since it doesn't seem to offend "my veteran"... that probably plays a part in my

view of this subject.

Everyone should be able to do (or not do) whatever they feel is appropriate during the Memorial Day weekend.

I agree.  It's become so commercialized.

Gentle Reminder ~~ Memorial Day is the day we remember and honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

@walkingal  All the holidays are commercialized, none mire than Christmas. "Christmas in July" is not far off so even more money is to be made. Is  the birth of Jesus even mentioned in any of the sale ads/pitches for that holiday?

And much of what those we remember on this holiday died for.

Have you looked at your phone for GIFs etc.? Many regarding a three day weekend party and Happy Memorial Day. I sent one to a girlfriend who was in the Marines in Vietnam thank you for your service and a happy one with Snoopy and Woodstock as she likes Snoopy.

My friend enlisted to help her brother not to go. She had a four year college degree in Math and said they didn't know where to place her. She ended up as a courier smoking a pipe and dressing like a Vietnamese woman. She tanned well as had Russian/Mongolian eyes to fit in. She retired as a Captain and with her teacher retirement travels all over the world.

When we were at General Patton's grave near Luxembourg we had a special ceremony for  the Veterans on the River Cruise. She was the only woman. We also went to the  nearby German cemetery which was very plain and several soldiers buried in one grave.

@Commoner Exec Mr Wilkes.. exactly, well said. I’m amazed people can get into fights about it here. And I’m sure neither party set out to. My husband is a Vietnam Vet and has been at functions yesterday and today. If someone says happy Memorial Day I’m not going to holler at them. 🤷‍♀️

I hear "Happy Memorial Day" a lot. I was brought up not to say it.

DH is named after his father's older brother who was shot down in the Pacific during WWII. Technically he's MIA, because they never found him, but there were witnesses and they know where his plane is. There is a group in California who tries to find missing planes. They have been successful in finding some and bringing personal effects to their families. They tried to reach it in 2017, but were unable to. They have not given up. And we keep hoping.

A college friend was one of the Gulf War POW's. He later died from his injuries after being tortured.

One of our local police officers lost his son in Afghanistan when an IED exploded.

So this morning in church I remembered those who gave their lives and we prayed they will never be forgotten.

I understand the "Happy Memorial Day" people say refers to the picnics and families and friends getting together. It refers to the happy memories we are creating. And how we all need that right now in our world!

So if someone says it to me, and like most of us, I have heard it a lot in the past few days, I reply, "Enjoy your long weekend."

How sad our small town has had Memorial Day parades..they were small but they happened.

There was a notice in the local papr that the Memorial Day parade had been canceled due to lack of participants!
