I think so, @goldensrbest. I'm going to be cremated and really don't care at all what's done with the ashes. "Ashes to ashes and dust to dust." That's it....

It seems apropos for Joan.
As for the illegality of it - thousands and thousands of people leave, toss, spread, put, sprinkle, etc. their loved ones ashes where they don't have permission to, every year. It's not unique because Melissa did it, she's the same as everyone else honoring a loved ones wishes, i.e. no reason to be especially indignant about it, happens all the time. I doubt very much that anyone who does it cares that it's "wrong." And 99% of the time no one ever knows.
My mom went into the sea; I think I'd prefer the forest.

Some people share far too much information.
Then again it keeps Melissa and her mother in the news.

I believe Joan was buried in Jewish tradition. The "ashes" business must be a publicity stunt...........

I'm not Jewish but I thought Jewish law forbid cremation.

Not every Jew is religious Orthodox; in fact, relatively few are in the US. There are 2-3 different Jewish 'denominations' and these may well have different POV.

Maybe David Dangle could sell some of Joan's ashes on QVC. Buy more and save!

@RealQuiet Yes, I watched the show. I thought it was a great idea. She knew Edgar better than anyone,so I'm sure it's something he would have approved of. She also put a few on the set of the Johnny Carson show after he left as I remember. Only Joan! She was outrageous and I loved her for it.
All thatl said, Joan knew how to grab attention and she certainly did.
