Melissa Rivers book The Book of Joan

I am reading Melissa Rivers book The Book of Joan. I was surprised that she was talking about the fact that she and her mom didn't think to trademark, copyright their Red Carpet show. She said, " if we had, we'd have been sitting pretty, instead of hawking tchotchkes on QVC." I thought that was such an insult as I am sure her mom made millions selling her jewelry, clothing on QVC.

With all respect to Melissa...she really wouldn't be anywhere without her mother.  Joan always brought Melissa into everything she was doing.  I remember when QVC had a 'bridal shower' show when Melissa was engaged.  You think QVC did that for Melissa??? No, it was because of Joan.  I remember Melissa's jewelry was a bust on the show. (at least in my opinion)  Melissa never seemd to be enthusiastic when she was on with Joan to sell her jewelry.  I know she's a producer for Fashion Police..but again, it was a show with her mom..Joan Rivers.

On the other side of the coin, she was very close to her mom.  The way Joan passed was horrendous and very sad and avoidable.  BUT comments like that won't endear her to anyone.  Joan was one of the first celebrities to sell products on QVC and it was a goldmine.  This goldmine has been passed on to Melissa.  Maybe she wishes she didn't have to deal with QVC.  Joan certainly left her well off that she's set for life. Melissa should be more appreciative for what QVC did for Joan and herself.

I agree with everything you've said.  I too remember when Melissa had her silver line on QVC.  She appeared unenthusiastic and uninformed.  And the only reason she got the gig in the first place was because of her mother.

On the other hand, I feel sorry for Melissa.  Overshadowed, dominated, and run over by her mom all her life--how do you escape that?  How would YOU like to have had Joan for a mom?  It would be fight with her all the time, or bend to her wishes and shut up.  I'm sure they both loved one another very much, and obviously clung to one another after Edgar left them.  BUT, that kid had a hard hard mom to live with.

Re: Melissa Rivers book The Book of Joan

I think Joan's career was at a low point when she started at QVC.  QVC was a great thing for her and I think she'd be the first to say it.

How old is Melissa anyway?  And how long have Joan's "tchotchkes" been on QVC.  Do the math.  Melissa was too self centered and self involved to know what what going on.  I'm not sure they had even reconciled by then.  As long as she had what she wanted, she didn't have to worry her little head about how.

I might be wrong...I doubt it.

I also am surprised ( I guess I shouldn't  be ) that Melissa's prose is filled with the " f " word. I think Melissa is trying to be as clever with words as her mom was but she can't carry it off. Of course Joan's language was very salty to say the least.

Re: Melissa Rivers book The Book of Joan

I guess I can't believe she's called her mother's peices 'tchotckies'.

She (Joan) has quite a following for her jewelry and her clothes.  Supposedly very well made from what I've read on the Fashion forum.

And that is a stinging one liner to Joan's rep (David Dingle?) who prides himself in presenting Joan's collection.

Ouch!  It's still being sold here and they always say not to bite the hand that feeds you.
