May Joan now RIP and may Melissa and Cooper also find peace. Melissa wants to devote her efforts to make sure nobody else goes through what she and Cooper did and wants to turn her attention toward ensuring there are better standards for the operation of outpatient clinics. Good for her. .
The terms of the settlement are confidential. I'm not at all surprised this lawsuit was settled, given the facts of it that were in the news - the clinic seemed to be negligent about many things. This is a short article from tne NY Post which doesn't give a whole lot of information, given that the terms were kept confidential.
There was a Rivers jewelry Lunchtime Special today and I watched the video of the product (a brooch) which still had Joan presenting it. I was thinking just earlier in the day as I watched that video how much I miss Joan on QVC.

Glad it was settled; I hope it serves as a good example to other clinics who are negligant.

I strongly admire Melissa for taking them to task and to continue to advocate for patients who opt for clinics like this. Too many "professionals" in the medical community seem to become desensitized to the fact that they are caring for human beings... even famous ones! Too often the Clinics themselves have employees that are lax, skip protocol and have become dangerously complacent in their jobs. Unfortunately the only thing that brings them all back in line is a lawsuit and payout. Strikes the fear of God in everyone!
Same with Convalescent Homes. Back in California I was constantly in touch with and referring to CANHR (Calif Advocates for Nursing Home Reform)... hopefully by now, every state has some kind of organization that monitors these places. Long hard personal story........ ![]()

I asked my ENT surgeon what happened in the Rivers case and this what he said. The doctor was doing a scope under twilight sleep when they (doctor) decided to take a biopsy which is supposed to be done under general anasesia(sp?). Well, the throat seized up and the clinic didn't have the equipment to help her. So clearly doctors fault.

Does anyone know if any of the medical team lost their licenses due to negligence?
The lawsuit must have been very difficult for Melissa and Cooper. She has Joan's personality and strength from within.

I see that as a warning for us all. Don't have procedures done in a clinic, insist on having everything done in a hospital, because there can be complications like the mess they made of poor Joan.

I miss Joan too. She might have been 81 but she certainly wasn't ready to go and the circumstances of her death so painful.

@butterfly123 I do not but you could probably find out by Googling it. It may be too early because doctors are usually afforded a hearing before losing a license. That could all take a while, esp. if the doctor has hired a lawyer for the hearing (which is usually the case).

ITA .... and I seem to recall Joan saying in an interview she had a fear of not coming out of procedures. While the clinic was definitely negligent, Joan should have insisted that procedure be done at a hospital where there are more doctors and equipment readily available.

@Noel7 For those people not as wealthy as Joan, that is not always your choice, due to what insurance does or doesn't cover -- or it may be much more cost effective to go outpatient. I wouldn't say never go to an outpatient clinic - this occurrance was rare.
