There is a handicapped man and woman in this area who shop at my favorite grocery store, and after crossing paths with them several times on the stores riding carts, I know to steer clear of them.

The man makes a parking space near the front door with his older Cadillac and blocks normal access to the best 10 parking spaces in the lot! When I see his car, I know to find where he is first, and then shop away from him, which essentially means shopping the store in reverse. Unfortunately he never has a list; some days he gets in and out quickly, and other days he just drives around the store to get whatever pops in his head and drives that cart like he owns the place.

The woman does not make a parking space near the door, but in the cart she blocks every aisle she's in, often takes 5-10 minutes to get down an aisle, and she wants to talk to everyone who walks near her! I can usually walk in the store, load a cart with $300 worth of food and get out in 15 minutes, except when one of these two shoppers are there.

I have been in many different types of stores where someone on those motorized carts come flying at you. Some yell at you to get out of the way, others just try to run you over.

I'm not really sure how many of them are really disabled and how many are just out to get someone. There have been a few I really wish I had been carrying a board, or a mop handle or some other "weapon" myself.

Not really sure if they are mad at anyone in particular or maybe they just hate the world. But, I usually duck into another aisle when I see one of them now.

As for Meijer's store, or any other, it's not up to them to tell someone they aren't playing nice. Yes, they can order them out of their store, but would you really want to have everyone watching you as you order a disabled person to get out?

I suppose security could stop them, if the store has a security officer, but again they are picking on someone that has a disability. That does make them look like a bully or like they have no heart.

I have gotten run into, and it does hurt. But, report it to the store, and they will "make a note of it", and that's about it.

We live in a world where each person says they are the person that is important. They come first. They have rights before anyone else. ME, or I, is their favorite word. No one else matters. You,the store manager, no one will change that.

@comedy clubber , please forgive me for being a bit confused. Did he slam into you, or into your grocery cart which absorbed much of the impact before it hit your arm?

Or, did he manage to both directly hit you and hit your cart which also hit you?

If he hit you directly with his motorized shopping vehicle it's a wonder he didn't knock you right down!

I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often. Some are busy looking for something on the shelves while driving forward. It would be like driving your car while looking out the side windows admiring scenery.

@comedy clubber Did you mention to the store the part about "no Christmas tree this year"? That might have impacted how they reacted to you, as that does imply further suffering on your part....which is often utilized in lawsuits. It could have caused them to clam right up.

I re-read your original post and from your own words this man ran into your cart, which caused your cart to hit your arm and that led to severe bruising. Cart crashes are not unhead of in stores, even when neither cart is motorized. The man that hit you owed you an apology for certain. I hope it heals quickly.

Blame an entire Meijer store chain because a handicapped person ran into you?? Really?? I absolutely LOVE my Meijer stores. They opened, where I live, about 7 years ago and shopping is soooo much better! Couldn't live without my Meijer.

I'm not sure what else to say here. The chain store is not the problem. Electric carts are there just as handicapped parking outside, to help those that can't walk.

I;ve been hit in the heels by people with regular shopping carts when they get to close to me in a checkout line and its crowded. Should I file a complaint with the store?

People are careless everhwere you go. No establishment can or should be held responsible for that. Now if one of their workers was riding it or pushing around a heavy pallet and hit you with it, then yes, they can be hld at fault. But a store can't be sued for what a customer does,

Good grief,

This isn't really about Meijer, it's about some inconsiderate jerk.  Whether on foot or in a riding cart, he's probably just an inconsiderate jerk.  I have seen people in stores riding those and I have never seen anyone zooming around.  In fact, I didn't think they were even able to go that fast.

As an aside, I was in a Meijer store for the first time 2 weeks ago.  I was not the least bit impressed.  The prices were nothing to write home about and I thought the store was very poorly laid out and made no sense.

They are building one about a mile away from my home and I had high hopes it would replace Giant Eagle for me but I don't think that's going to be the case.  I wouldn't care if I never went back in another Meijer again.

It will be three weeks on New Year's eve.  I still have a bruise, albeit, much lighter, but cannot wear the dress I was planning to wear to dinner at a friend's home.  It is a butterfly sleeve that will touch the bruise whenever I will move, and I am not interested in that pain.

I have been told twice that someone from the store would be contacting me directly, and that the tapes would be reviewed.  Nothing has happened.  I believe that they know they do have some liability in not monitoring the speed of these wheelchair carts, or their maintenance and have not done so.  I am not a one to sue anyone person, and never threatened to sue them.  I have however, told them that I will never shop there again and will inform others of the dangers of shopping there.  To inform others is not a threat, it is a duty.

I don't understand what it is you want them to do. I doubt their carts are set to go any faster than in any other store. Did he do this on purpose or was he not paying attention? If he did it on purpose and it was a big deal you should have called the cops.

Also if you have a bruise that two weeks later is painful from the touch of a sleeve, I hope you've seen a doctor.

Re: Meijer store

[ Edited ]

You are free to shop anywhere you choose..What happened to you can happen anywhere there is some inconsiderate person on a scooter

I shop at Meijers all the time. It has never happened to me nor to anyone I know...
