We didn't have most of these problems when we used cash.

@Natureluvr How frustrating. I received a notice that my SS# and email were out on the dark web.
I put a freeze at all the credit agencies and signed up for an income tax password (sent out via mail) which changes every year.
I also have my credit cards set up so I get an email notice everytime I charge an item or there is a credit. .

Received the same letter. It is frustrating but not much you can do about it after the fact! Just keep an eye on your personal stuff.

This is what irks me.
We're constantly being pushed to put everything online. But even if we decline, our personal information is still out there ripe for hacking on the business and their 3rd party sites. And there doesn't seem to be much we can do about it.
I feel like we're painting the shutters without a secure foundation beneath the house.

Very little compensation given to us consumers . Looks like most companies get off the hook by providing " free credit monitoring " for one year . Some institutions are being sued such as Johns Hopkins health systems but most all of the compensation will go to the attorneys , abt $14 goes to those affected.
How abt that commercial where people can draw up a fake Quick claim deed and confiscate your home property ? Why do the local county & state offices let this occur so easily ?
Why does the Federal Gov let this continue ?
@skatting44 and advertise to the crooks how to do it!

I received the same or similar letter but in reading it carefully, it was just generically speaking of the hacking (as a scare tactic) and was merely trying to sell identity theft coverage.

Getting hacked is, sadly, now part of life. Every company tries to prevent it but scammers are everywhere.
When I get a letter like that, I immediately change my password and make sure it's a tough one.
I keep tabs on my credit and debit card.
I can't imagine someone gets their jollies out of my medical records. They are looking for money and will try to get your credit/debit card and bank account info through them but none of mine are in those records.
I've had a debit card and a credit card scammed in the last few years. I called the companies and they changed the number and sent me a new card. I can go to my bank and they'll make me a new card on the spot.
If people used their brains and talents for good instead of bad, they'd be a lot happier and more successful.

I was hacked on a Major Credit Card. They were fine and helpful and a new card was issued with in a week. All fraud charges erased. It was used four days by theives.. I had other valid cards for ordering and shopping and pristine credit. No problem adding a new card.
I felt like a criminal by Q as they shut down my account for days. All automatic ship, pending, waitlist, advanced order erased. My Q account closed and no ordering for several days. It was over a weekend so took longer to be able to be even use a Major C.C.
I had four Synchrony accounts, ALL of them automatically closed. In order to obtain those cards again I was told I had to video myself, copy my Driver's Licence and scan the back. My identity was questioned?
I refused to go through by the bother and Synchrony can keep all four accounts. I had a Qcard for 30 years and used it before they went to Synchrony Bank.
I have two friends have their bank accounts hacked. My one friend used to take a picture of her checks to deposit. I am thankful accounts are insured. All I was told is it goes to Fraud Department. I doubt anyone gets prosecuted? I wonder if they get into FICA scores as well? I wrote to my Legislators regarding a concern of the increase in Cyber Fraud. I hear of it too often.
