I have seen so many different, dire warnings on tv today.....masks are a must, don’t wear a mask, etc. A CDC person said don’t stock up on surgical masks and surgical gloves because drs need them. I think he is too late since most retailers have sold out of them now anyway.

@lovesrecess

I'm on multiple social media platforms..and none have said

masks are a must.  Do you have a source?

CDC is advising well people NOT to wear masks.

And as for someone w/ lung issues, this is not an airborne virus.

they would follow the same procedures as the rest of us:

Don't wear a mask, don't touch face, wash hands,

avoid close contact w/ those who are sick, stay home if sick.

I think people are panicking and worried about masks & not worrying about the simple steps one can take. If you are not in an area where the virus is active, you’ve not been in contact with someone with the virus, you don’t need a mask.

Also, I think one of the most dangerous and disgusting things that I see is politicizing the disease. The CDC has plans already developed in the case of influenza, Ebola, anthrax or any other communicable diseases. They just change the name. Having had expats in China during SARS, Mexico during H1N1 & employees exposed to Anthrax in NYC/Washington DC, I worked with the CDC very closely. It is one of the government agencies that do work and very independently from the White House. Get your information from their website cdc.gov. Not from these idiotic talk shows. I don’t care what your political affiliation is, get your information from people who know what they are doing and follow the clusters & source of the contact.

That’s the most dangerous thing right now is panic because of misinformation and political spew. Politics should be put aside by politicians, the media and Individuals & let’s work together for a solution and containment.

Good information.. Thank you !

@sidsmom, I stated yesterday on another thread that for once I'm not sure of what to think concerning this virus.

This morning I was woken up by two my kids texting back and forth on our family's group chat. My son who works for a university in Central NY was asking his sister to send him some masks. Her husband works in a lab at a pharmaceutical company. My son is not flustered easily and I was surprised that he was inquiring about masks.

I think about masks -

if you have them, great.  If not, wrap a scarf around your face.  If you're handy with a needle and thread, whip up  some cute ones.  I think three layers of cotton sewn together should do it.  But you'll only need them if we get into a really massively bad situation.

And, when this situation resolves itself, don't buy somebody's left over mask supply on Ebay.  Get them straight from the manufacturer!

I have some disposable face masks because I wear them when I fly to and from Las Vegas and have worn them for about a year and a half while flying.

Now you couldn't buy any in a pharmacy if you wanted to since they have been out of stock in the greater Vancouver, B.C. area since the end of January. I do have some disposable dust masks and they are better than nothing.

I also made my own face mask out of athletic bra cup inserts or swimsuit top inserts (semi-triangular shaped laser edge fused foam and nylon fabric) that I wasn't using and didn't like. I sewed elastic straps to go over the ears. I only made one just to try it out and I think it fits OK on my face. Of course it's not an N95 face mask but it's better than nothing. I got the idea from the news stories when people in China were using a bra as a face mask.

I am not going to listen to the CDC or Health Canada when it comes to whether to use a face mask or not. If I feel like I need or want to wear one, I at least have the option to wear one.

@TY I'm completely with you.  We can make masks if we feel the need to.

It's funny, but I saw that exact same thing you did - the hand made masks out of bras and thought I can do that too if need be - and then it flew out of my mind, maybe because I bought masks on an Amazon lightning deal back in November for housework.

The biggest thing seems to be to keep your hands away from your face.  I've started trying to be conscious of that.  It's very difficult!

The Emergency Bra that doubles as a facemask Woman LOL

September 27, 2010

A bra from inventor, Dr. Elena Bodnar, is designed to let people breathe easier. Her Emergency Bra is a protective device that transforms from a bra into two respiratory face masks to filter out harmful airborne particles, such as those released by fire, explosion, terrorist, radiological, biological attack, and natural disasters.

Dr. Elena Bodnar, originally from the Ukraine, developed the Emergency Bra after being inspired by the Chernobyl nuclear plant disaster.

She added a few design features to give the bra the extra functionality, including shoulder straps that easily convert into adjustable head straps, flex inserts along the top rim of the cups which mold tightly around the nose and bridge area, and an inner liner/filler that acts like a butterfly valve during inhale cycles.

I went to a paint store today and there was a sign on the door as well as signs throughout the store saying "Attention we are out of dust masks.".  I asked the cashier if people were buying them for medical reasons and she told me that they have several Chinese customers who bought them up to send to realitves back in China.
