Apparently this incident in SC is becoming a "monkey see, monkey do" situation.

An hour ago my husband and I were loading my cart of groceries into my car at IGA. I look up to see a man drive out of the store in the handicapped cart with a basket full of eggs, meat, and frozen dinners. Since nothing was bagged, I knew he was stealing this food. His truck was parked in a regular parking space, not a handicapped space, and 4 of those spaces were available when I went in, and came out.

I could see the store manager watching from inside the store. Just as I looked away, the city police pulled into the lot blocking the man at his truck. At that point the store manager came out, verified those items had not been paid for, and of course the man could not produce a receipt; an officer wrote down every item in the basket. I heard the store manager verify to police he had camera footage, so the man was arrested and left in the police car, and the manager drove the cart back into the store.

In this area of WV, these types of incidents also result in banishment from the store.

I have seen several thieves put items in the basket of one of those carts and ride right out the doors without paying. Store personnel everywhere. The ones I saw had things in boxes, like blenders and steaks they had put in plastic bags...no one made an effort to stop them. The electric scooters are not always used by people who really need them, they just take them because they are too lazy to walk around the store....I also see shoplifters hide clothing and other stuff under baby blankets in empty strollers. I have seen them even put items in a stroller under a blanket next to a baby. Sadly, I have seen this so often I can't even count the times. People think if they want something, they are entitled to it and just take it.

Those scooters barely move from what I have seen.

You don't need a pass or anything to use one of the scooters. Maybe it depends on the store. I have seen people take one, ride around for awhile, then just abandon it and walk around and do their shopping. The ones who seem to actually need them are usually elderly people who have trouble walking for very long.

More than likely she will be selling most of what she stole...or else she is going on hard-core Keto. Unfortunately, the theft happening so often now in stores isn't always someone on a scooter. I saw someone on the news who just took her reusable shopping bags in, filled them up, and carried them out to her car. I can't even imagine doing something like that!

@Trailrun23 The ones I witness at my local Publix and Wal-Mart go about 1 or 2 mph, tops. And when in reverse they sound like a garbage truck backing up.

@RedTop , and that's exactly what should happen. I just read that police in Chicago are no longer allowed to chase after anyone going into a bank and stealing $. SMH

As high as meat is getting, we may all be eating cardboard before it's over....

I told my Mother (96) that we're going to start dumpster diving...and she has to do the diving.....LOLOL....

Although - come to think of it - $1,500 worth of meat probably wouldn't take up that much space nowadays!
If this happened in Cali, no one would stop her as she wouldn't be prosecuted for theft so why waste their time.
