I looked it up this morning and have seen several news outlets reporting the parties, but I have not seen anything to say that this story is not true. So I don't know.

Also there is a post here that Snopes also says it's false.

I would think this would be considered child abuse and endangerment.

Lucibee: I understand - google was flooded with reports of these measles parties earlier.

From what I am reading the chicken pox parties were not quite true, either. I remember hearing about them back in the '80's but didn't pay attention to them.

When we were kids, parents took non school age children to homes with measles. Back then there wasn't a vaccine.

To do that now seems criminal. Why would anyone prefer their child be sick?

My sister was 5 and I was 4 when we both had(the) measles. I remember our next door neighbor bringing her 3 year old over to play..

The history of this goes at least as far back as the 1964 Rubella Epidemic on the East Coast. Since it had become common knowledge that moms who got German Measles had a high risk of giving birth to severely handicapped babies, women who were of child bearing age would attempt to have Rubella before they were married, figuring that it was safer for their unborn children. This also was encouraged for older teenaged girls. I had Rubella when I was 16 and was VERY sick with it, and a blood test several years later proved that I was immune.

And then there's the children's book called Melanie's Marvelous Measles, written by an anti vax author, explaining to children what a wonderful adventure it is to have measles. Funny, I don't remember them being marvelous at all.

Well, I never heard of these things before now but if you do an internet search for "disease parties" it turns out there's quite a history, both real and rumor. I hate seeing the rumors in the news, because it probably will spark someone's interest and they'll give it a try.{#emotions_dlg.blink}

I remember my aunt bringing my cousins over to catch our chicken pox. I don't know how common it was though
