Re: Meal From Your Childhood

My Mom made the best beef stew. I watched (& helped) her prepare it for years, & knew all the ingredients, but, as an adult, I could never make it taste quite as good as she did. Maybe the missing ingredient was her love....

My poor father wanted to cook, try as he may everything was a epic fail! He made chili, I don't know if he didn't soak the beans enough or cook long enough but the beans were crunchy! He made meat sauce, it was all meat no sauce! He also once made Shrimp Tempura, it wasn't good. After a while he just gave up.

Re: Meal From Your Childhood

There are a lot of things my mom made when I was growing up that I haven't had since she passed.  I don't think my DH likes any of it.  LOL

Every single Sunday my dad made a big pot of soup, either chicken or beef. Regardless of whatever else was made on Sunday, we always had a bowl of soup first.

One of my favorites that they used to make was boiled ham, cabbage and potatoes.  All of it was thrown in one big pot and boiled.  I can even see that big white pot on the stove cooking.

@Lipstickdiva my Mom made that too!  I made it once (once) for DH, his review was that it didn't really taste like anything at all. Smiley LOL

Re: Meal From Your Childhood

This time of year Mom made lots of hearty potato soup, which she stretched even further with a can of corned beef and a can of peas.   My brother and I referred to it as porridge, but we loved coming home to a big bowl of it and a piece of hot, buttered cornbread.

My daughters love this potato soup and request it often.

So many of the meals mentioned were also favorites of mine and cooked to perfection by my mother!!  My grand -parents were Hungarian, so we were lucky that my mother cooked many traditional meals.

Love stuffed cabbage, dobos torte cake, goulash and one dish that was little pasta like bits with lots of red, paprika

sauce.  I went to college in another country, so only got home twice a year!! When home from college, Mom always had that paprika dish ready for me as first home meal!!

@Mj12 , the cabbage and potatoes required a lot of butter.  Woman LOL

That's very similar to corned beef and cabbage (and usually the potatoes and carrots went in towards the end with the cabbage)

The cabbage, potatoes and carrots tasted like .... nothing.

@corita my father's mother was Hungarian. I remember my mother saying when she was dating my father she was invited for dinner. She said her mother-in-law was heavy handed with the spices ( her mother cooked bland). If it wasn't for my mom's mother giving us care packages we would have starved ( just kidding)!
