Re: Maybe We Should Stop Giving Advice?

[ Edited ]

THE  plant-based food advocate (who is well-known around here  as THE supreme authority on plant-eating)  often falls into the word trap of claiming that plant-based eating can"reverse" illness and disease, "prevent" Alzheimers, and "heal" disease.

Strong words that can't be documented with scientific proof from a reputable source can totally kill a person's credibility.

Common sense leads intelligent people to totally ignore the message and simply get annoyed with the speaker.

This "advocate person" really should tone it down next time he/she decides to get up on a soapbox and lecture an audience about a theoretical   and unproven concept that cannot possibly apply universally to all human beings.

What annoys me is what @Trinity11 pointed out-how people are to blame for their illnesses.

Of course diet is important but blaming a person because she ate an egg or uses olive oil or whatever is cruel.

Most hypocritical is the nagging how the meat industry is polluting the planet and how cruel the industry is....yet ............wear leather.

It isn't so much the lecture it is how it is delivered.   Not to mention opposing pov backed by credible sources is always ignored.

I like a good discussion but once it becomes personal that's the end for me.

@Cakers3Well, that's a fact.  Also true of exercising.  Exercise all you want...or not at all.  Be fit or fat.  It doesn't matter.  You're still going to die.

Although some may prefer quality over quantity.  However long we are here, don't we want to be as healthy as we can be?

I get tired of the "plant-based diet" posts too.  I also know European civilians during WWII had improved health because the meat was taken to sustain the fighting armies.  (Please don't start the starvation argument.  Those who ate saw improvement regarding "conditions" and disease.)

Everyone has their own opinion.  If a particular poster posts something that doesn't apply to you, why not just move on?  Nobody here is expecting anyone here to protect or defend them from the thoughts of others.  At least I hope not.

@novamc1  Yes agree. I try and stay away from said posters lectures. Becomes quite tiresome.

@esmereldaThere is a big difference between presenting one's lifestyle vs. presenting one's lifestyle as the only way to live.

Posters have been called uninformed and ignorant; refusing to "learn" from the self-imposed authority and blaming others for their illnesses.

You know this.

As I said, discussions are great-but once it becomes about only one way to live, I walk away.

I don't step into the plant threads and trash them, as is done to other threads.

All a poster has to do is mention having a hamburger and off we go.

It seems some others could just walk away too.

And now I'm done with this particular plant issue.

Re: Maybe We Should Stop Giving Advice?

Well this thread took a detour.

Back to the original starting post, the reality is that no one can control who posts what. If they post personal business, and ask for advice, it really just turns back to the reader.

If giving advice doesn't feel right to you, scroll on by.

If you think you have something that would be considered good advice, the best you can do is post it and then move on.

Whether a person heeds the advice, or not, is well beyond anyone's control. They either take it or they ignore it.

I would never get offended if my advice was not taken. I also would not try to have everyone "not post something". Many more people read this board than actually post. Some posts are very interesting, even if you are not the one who posted it. Sometimes it hits upon something going on in your own life and you read stuff you had not thought about.

That the greatest thing about a message board. You can post, or not post. You can also read, glean info that is of help to you and never have to come into the light if you so choose.

@Cakers3   It is bullying pure and simple to accuse someone who is ill or has a relative who is ill of bringing it all on themselves.

It is name calling, telling people they are just ignorant etc.  It really is bullying in the worst sense of the word.  I agree is it simply cruel.   I'm not sure how that person gets by with some of the hurtful things they say.

Re: Maybe We Should Stop Giving Advice?

It's the mock sympathy that gets me. The whole, I feel sorry for people who don't eat this way or don't want to listen to the truth or the if only, so and so would have eaten this way...

The other thing is going on threads where no one is even asking for advice and piping in. I don't know anyone who goes on her plant based eating threads and tries to start an argument.

It's like some kind of hysteria.

I know for a fact the said poster comes here for comfort ,when she is frightened. We are her security blanket ,and I refuse to turn my back on her. If trying to help her understand  what is  happening  is nothing to fear and telling her to see her Dr, is bad advice, so be it

It would be worse for her, if everyone gave her a cold shoulder. We are a candle in her darkness, and I refuse to blow that out. She would even be more alone than she is now

@cherry ...This is a lovely post, kind, caring, and your comment that we are a candle in her darkness is beautiful, for a brief moment it turned on a light in the darkness we have in the world today.
