I met her when I was about 10 years old on the street car in San Francisco. My Father was the Motorman on the 14 line and she was the conductor, the one that took your fare when you got on. The first black female to work on the lines. She rose up and recreated herself.

She as a mentor to Oprah Winfrey. RIP.

Anika, it's one of my favorite quotes, too.

Such a wonderful and gifted person. She once spoke at a theatre I used to work for, and was as gracious as ever (not surprising). She had such a quiet elegance.

""Caged Bird"" was required reading in my college freshman english class. Cracked open a new place in my head. She flew in and left me changed ... in a profound and lasting way.
