She left her heart in San Francisco Smile

She loved The City. She worked in SF when she was young as a streetcar conductor, and then became a singer at the famous Purple Onion. She came back often, and became great friends with Cecil Williams, pastor of Glide Memorial Church. She was at the church often and supported their efforts to feed the poor every single day.

That was definitely a life well lived. She was an inspiration and we lost a great soul. RIP

I saw her in Cleveland many years ago doing a one woman show at the Playhouse. Most of the audience spent the evening dabbing away at tears. She was such a lovely, gracious woman and gifted speaker. they showed her speech at the Clinton election last night on our local news and it left me crying at the end.

My Father introduced me to her as his new conductor on the 14th streetcar line , from the Ferry building to Colma, in San Francisco., the end of the line where the cemeteries are built. At the time her name was Mabel. I love how successful she became and made so much of her life. I was about 10 at the time and rode the streetcar when dad was a motorman. She was just about 8 _10 years older than me. Oprah seem to have followed in her footsteps. I also see a face resemblance when she was younger.

A lot of her sayings helped me in life. I have them written in a book.

Noel, I have probably asked you this before but have you ever been to Glide? We used to go whenever we were in the city on a Sunday morning. It is a joyous experience! One everybody should experience. He is semi-retired now from what I hear. He and Jan do so much good work for the community!
