If this is Islamic Terrorism, then gun control is not going to do a thing to stop it. Arguing about stronger gun control (I am against stronger gun contrary, btw) is not going to stop terrorist killing . Look at the Boston Marathon bombings... no guns. Radical Islamic terrorists hate us,our country, our values, our freedoms, and a gay bar is definitely a target. Gay is not okay in their eyes. Knives,guns,bombs....they will find a way.
My best friend called just now. He just returned from Orlando (he used to live there) and his good fried is a bartender at Pulse. No one has heard from him yet. That's what is real. People are out having fun, living their lives and then this happens.Everything turns on a dime. It is going to happen more and more. If I had been in Orlando, I possibly would have been at Pulse, dancing with my friends. It could happen to any of us,anywhere we go. Gun control is not the root issue.

The terrorism aspect is very scary to me. I take some comfort that the person was on the Watch List. It indicates that at least they are doing something right. Sickening.
First step is working. They knew about him. Now how do we get better from here?
I remember a news item that said the FBI has IIRC nearly 1,000 ISIS-related investigations going on within the United States. Granted, this is a big place, but that averages 20 per state, though who knows whether they are spread out evenly. What comes to mind is that we should deport and ban anyone who has been shown to be engaged in behavior that would predict they'd be a danger to us. Clearly, they would have had to have broken specific laws. It wouldn't apply to the gunman, as he is reported to be a citizen, but given the large numbers under investigation and on the watch list, this might be the only way to make things work.
If someone is going to come here and even advocate or fund raise for terrorist activities/groups, they should be removed from our country. It's possible they are already doing this. I don't know. I just think it would cut down the number of people the FBI and police have to watch as possible terrorists/sponsors of terror.

At this point the rifle. The brainwashed will repeat the NRA talking points. And argue over semi automatic and automatic and the nuances between the two. The bottom line is no one needs a semi-automatic weapon. Again, I understand that people who own guns, own them in anticipation of having to kill someone, but semi automatics are clearly used for killing multiple people- so why do we allow them to be owned by ordinary (and many times deficient) citizens?
If one can't see it, no amount of explaining will help one understand, because one doesn't want to understand it.
It is like bringing a knife to a gun fight. If you can't match the enemy's weapons level, you will be defeated.

How did this person get a semi-automatic rifle and a handgun?

ISIS put out a call recently for the faithful to kill Americans during the holy month of Ramadan. Looks like this was the first. I hope it was a clarion call to those in our government to take action before there is a second.

This is heartbreaking and chilling. I just saw a mother interviewed and in tears, desperate for word of her son who hasn't been found yet. His boyfriend was found with multiple gunshot wounds. This is so tragic....I can't imagine what it's like for these people waiting to know if someone they love is dead or alive. I shall pray for them and the wounded today.

Agreed.
I understand this particular incident appears to involve a citizen or our own nation, but....
We definintely have to look at our boarders and immigration. And not the tied up in congressional committee, campaign blurb kind of "look" but really make serious changes and quickly.
It won't stop everything, but would be a start to keep some distance between those that come here to recruit and harm and those that live here and might want to join in and participate.
