CDC is recommending that we wear masks. Can anyone tell me where I can get one? They are on backorder on Amazon and CVS etc. do not have them? I went grocery shopping for essentials today and would say half of the people were wearing them. I live in the Northeast and want to stay safe.

Masks are not for keeping you safe. They're for keeping the people around you safe. If you're an asymptomatic carrier, a mask will help prevent your germs from reaching people around you when you're out.

So that bandanna or cute number you're getting on etsy won't protect you. It's important to remember this because if you do, you'll be more likely to keep the need for social distancing top of mind.

Also the virus enters through your eyes too....so unless you wear goggles ....the mask is not going to help save you.

@wakefield64  I was in the same boat as you but I was lucky.  No Amazon masks but I battled cancer 8 years ago and had a few ear loop masks I found in my closet I had to wear whenever I left the house during chemo bc I had little immune system then.

I was online and also saw ppl saying to go to Etsy and

I ordered ones there and they are expensive

Here's my suggestion - there is a video online of the Surgeon General showing how to easily make one using a scarf and rubber bands or hair ties - absolutely no sewing.  I don't sew and even I can make the one he's showing.

I ordered 2 from Etsy but haven't received them yet.  I went to the market today and wore a bandana to cover my nose and mouth.  Most shoppers today seemed to be wearing masks of some kind.

I hope to not have to go to the market for the next 2 weeks, but if I do need to i will do the same or hopefully the Etsy order will arrive soon.

A few days ago I ordered a box of 100 cotton masks from Walmart.com.It is due to arrive by next Monday. I will share them with some friends & family.

I know they're not the answer but they will give me some piece of mind.I will take Dr. Fauci's advice & only wear a mask when I'm in a closed public space like a supermarket.

I made mine. Took my husband's shirts. The one I made have a pocket to insert tissues which can be changed. I found the pattern on YouTube. I was so lucky to have elastic. I don't even know why. Lol

@wakefield64

Does your husband have any of those oversized handkerchiefs in red or blue that men used to use?  They are made of cotton and work well as a mask.

Our neighbor is a seamstress and quilter and made cotton masks for anyone who wanted one.  She gave us two masks yesterday.

@noodleann  True about masks helpig others but not us - but I'm hoping even if we all have non medical grade masks we are protecting each other in that mine protects them from me and theirs protects me from them.  The masks I have from chemo specifically say high filtration protection but explains they are not true medical grade but I figure something is always better than nothing.  I have not been out among the public in a long time and hoping the non-medical ones do well enough bc I can't see being stuck inside for more weeks on end but I will if I have to.

You can use a scarf, bandana anything to cover your nose and mouth.

I have a headband I use when working in the garden.

It's very wide, polyester fabric, with covered elastic in the back.

If I wear it around my neck I can pull it up over my nose, fits perfectly.

It's a black & white pattern.

Maybe you  have something similar you can usse.

I ordered some handmade cotton masks on Etsy, and some diposable masks on YesStyle.  I have not received them yet, and I don't know how long they will take to arrive.  But I figured that it is best to have some, since it is evident that masks do prevent the spread of the virus.
