I think some of our posters do not know how large the population of China is.

A classified report by US intelligence finds China concealed the extent of the coronavirus outbreak in its country, severely under-reporting both total cases & deaths. The false data influenced how governments around world responded early on.
China isn’t the only country with suspect public reporting. Western officials have pointed to Iran, Russia, Indonesia and especially North Korea, which has not reported a single case of the disease, as probable under-counts. Others including Saudi Arabia and Egypt may also be playing down their numbers.

Back in February a friend who is a police officer and a bit of a "doomsday" person said he estimated thousands of deaths in our city alone. When I heard that I immediately bought some N95 masks and stocked up on everything else. When I had to take an emergency flight to get my child from college, I wore a mask the entire time. This is when the CDC said "don't wear masks, just wash your hands and do social distancing". Our plane was pretty full and not one other person had on a mask. Nor were there any masks in the crowded airports.
I couldn't help but think this advice was bad. Sure, a regular mask doesn't filter out the virus, but at least it would help asymptomatic virus carriers to maybe not pass it on as easily. Even last week our local Costco and Walmart was packed with shoppers, none wearing masks.
Now the advice is shifting but I wonder if it's too little, too late.

"Given the fact that there is a degree of transmission from asymptomatic individuals who may not know that they’re infected, we need to at least examine the possibility, Fauci said in an interview with NBC News' Savannah Guthrie on Tuesday night.
"It doesn’t need to be a classical mask. But something that would have someone prevent them from infecting others," Fauci added. "This is actively being looked at."
The potential change, which remains under discussion internally at the CDC according to an official, would involve do-it-yourself types of fabric coverings for the face, not the kinds of masks used by health care providers. The theory is that the homemade masks would help reduce the risk of someone unknowingly spreading the virus through coughs, sneezes, even yawns or simple conversation.
The coronavirus is spread predominantly through large respiratory droplets, which are thought to travel about six feet through the air.
There is no scientific evidence that wearing face coverings would have a measurable impact on flattening the coronavirus curve. And whether it would have any impact at all is still up for debate.

N95 masks should be saved for hospital workers. I heard someone local was making fabric masks with removable hepa filters. I’m trying to find a few of these but if not, I’ll order masks online. Never thought of Etsy but that makes perfect sense.

Masks don't protect you. They protect others FROM you, because you could still have the virus even if you're asymptomatic. Also, if the masks aren't made of the right material and fitted properly, they won't do that job very well, either.
Masks made of absorbent fabric, like cotton, will absorb moisture in the air in addition to the vapor of your breath, so they become contaminated and must be removed carefully and washed well every time they're worn around other people.
I don't believe people will do that. I think this whole mask fad is giving people a false sense of security, and the price we'll pay is compromised social distancing. If people are wearing crummy masks and anyone in the general vicinity is carrying the virus, closer proximity will yield more infections.
I also resent the idea that we've become reduced to seeking protection from a potentially fatal infection with etsy-grade solutions, just on principle. This is not acceptable.
If we're to wear masks, I expect to be issued one properly. I expect to be able to go to my pharmacy, which has my insurance info, and get my mask there. They'll record it against my insurance at no charge. Then I'm responsible for maintaining it and replacing it, if necessary. One surgical mask per person.
That's how I'd do this if I ran things. Everyone gets a proper mask. Or mail a mask to all the homes that return a census form, according to the data provided. That would serve as an incentive to return those forms.
But that would just put masks in the hands of people. It wouldn't mean they'd wear them correctly, maintain them, and it would compromise the incentive people now have to keep 6' away--to avoid breathing one another's fumes. That's the biggest problem I see with civilian-grade masks as things stand.

It just doesn't make sense to me at all.
If a mask will protect us from a sick person, why doesn't a mask the non sick person wear help too?! I think it would help and couldn't hurt!
ridiculous that they are still discussing this blah blah blah. Wear a dang mask! I didn't last time I went out but will if I have to go out again.
At least for my own peace of mind.
Just getting really disgusted with all these researchers redearching all over the place while people are dying! Nice that they have time in their nice offices to do so. Sorry, probably shouldn't have listened to those in the ivory tower of research.

It is all just a terrible nightmare.
I just keep thinkg can we wake up from this please God?!
I feel like I just have to keep living as if it may be the last day.
I just feel so incredibly grateful everyday of everything that brings me back to the world as I knew it-with being with my family, even watching dumb tv, mundane QVc wonderful Pat and Dan talking about, i don't even know, just liking their being there. And grateful for all of you here too.

@on the bay I wear a mask and it's definitely because I believe it will give me some protection. That's what prompted me to wear a mask. The fact that it will protect other people too (from me) is just icing on the cake.
I don't think anybody will think you are sick if you wear a mask. They will probably think you are a responsible person.

Just this morning a doctor said that we could wear scarves, bandana's or whatever we could come up with when we are out in public. I have some old bandana's from my biker days and I will wear them when I go to the grocery store.
Wearing them will help in not spreading the virus.
