Re: Mask Observation (cont. subject)

Trump is condering requesting that all Americans wear some kind of protective mask when out in the public but he and the powers that be are battling over that decision. Just read this on MSN.com.

If a virus is spread by coughing and sneezing (and who knows if it is even airborne yet) then it stands to reason all people should be covering their noses and mouths.  Covering with anything is better than nothing.  I also wear a mask during flu season if I can't avoid going into a crowded environment.

Look. Everyone was told at the start that masks wouldn't be of any use to a healthy person.  BS.  Again the healthy person is protecting themself from an infected person.  If we are also coming in close contact with an asymptomatic carrier that's another reason to wear a mask.  We have to all protect ourselves from each other until this is over.  Do not assume you are safe.

And another thing.  A cough or sneeze travels much farther than 6 feet so you had better be well out of the way if a person coughs or sneezes into the air.

@Deree, the experts state that the best reason to wear a mask is to protect others because you may have the virus before realize it or you are asymptomatic.

The masks that most us are wearing (including me) will not be very protective for us. But I wear one anyway. For one thing, it keeps me from touching my face; I do have to remember not to touch or readjust my mask, though.

Well yes. However masks are a 2-way street and actually double the protection if you will.  Bottom line is it's a physical barrier and 2 physical barriers on both people are better than one.  Just common sense.

That would be great, wouldn't it? @Deree. I guess one good admonition would be not to become compacent about distancing just because we're wearing a mask.

@suzyQ3  This is exactly what the experts are concerned about.  That people maintain their social distancing even if everyone is wearing a mask.  Wearing a mask or other face covering does not mean you are safe to congregate.  The masks the general public wears are only about 40-50% effective.  The N95 masks reserved for healthcare workers are about 95% effective at protecting.  Let's hope people don't become stupid again.

Wear a mask. Social distance. Be part of the solution - not part of the problem.

Uh huh... And where would we get them? The same place we're getting toilet paper, oh and food?

In my pantry with my cupcakes...

Re: Mask Observation (cont. subject)

After Dr. Birx spoke at the briefing today I finally understand why wearing a mask minimizies the risk of you transmitting the virus but doesn't protect you from it very well.  Your eyes are still exposed and that's one of the "ports of entry", so to speak.

Still, wearing them when we don't know if we are a carrier or not seems to me to be a good idea.

Yes important to also wear sunglasses when outside.  If cloudy I have a pair of clear glasses with pretty large frames.

Remember, the virus droplets in the air  also get in to your body through your eyes.... so just a nose and mouth mask are not really going to help....you need goggles too.

@Deree

I always wear sunglasses when I'm outside.  I don't think they would be much more effective than homemade masks at keeping someone safe, though.

Better than nothing, however.  At least, it seems to me it would be.

I agree that a lot of people will act like they are invincible if they are wearing a mask.  I see it already in the grocery store.  I've posted already about how pushy the mask wearers are.  It's crazy.

Re: Mask Observation (cont. subject)

If it keeps people from transmitting the virus I'm all for it.

And how many people even know they are carriers?  Very few.
