@MoJoVwrote:There has been a fascinating series on all these rulers on PBS the last few weeks. Elizabeth's Spies,I think it's called.
it was the genesis of MI 5 & MI 6. England kept developing the Secret Service. It continued to help them (Spanish Armada defeat, etc ) They never stopped it. It took centuries for the rest of world to wake up and develop one of their own.

It's super to know that you who have contributed to this thread have so much interest and knowledge of the period!
That bit about Britain's development of secret intelligence services--- fascinating, @songbird!

Yeah, I'm tickled when I read others who share my love of English history.
I've read more books on the Tudors and Queen Victoria and all her kids who
all married into different Royal families then the present Queen probably. LOL
Tonight , on the show, I think Alfie is born he is the one who had that blood clotting disease where you can bleed to death so easy. I know the word, but, can't spell it LOL hemophilia, there spell checked it. Queen Vic was a carrier, you know and passed it down to 2 daughters and Alfie will die because of it.
I did great on history while in high school hundred yrs. ago, but, math was
not my strong point. LOL D's in math, B's and better on history. LOL

@MoJoV Yes "Queen Elizabeth's Secret Agents". Fascinating series showing how much power William Cecil, her "spy master" had.
It was on right after Victoria.

Recommend watching Cate Blanchett in Elizabeth I and II great movies
They stay pretty close to the truth. I hate those movies that just turn historical fact into bunch of lies, half truths and made up stuff full of sex and
titillation. If that's what you want rent a porno.
I just watched 'Versailles' about KIng Louis XIV. I'm not as much up on France as I am England, but, I don't think he had a brother and in this horror
him and his 'brother' fought all the time. Somebody sits down and writes whatever they want to and say it's about King Louis of France. I hate that. LOL I never read fiction, so, I just want the real facts as much as any of us
know after hundres of yrs. later.

Mary was so trusting of her cousin Elizabeth that when Mary was warned not to go to Enland for refuge she took no heed. I recommend the Antonia Frasher biograpy of Mary. Antonia wrote about most of the Enlish royalty, including Elizabeth I You may want to read all in order of reign

I guess the "good old days" weren't so good to most people.

If you have HBO on demand y'all might be interested in a 3 episode mini series called GunPowder. It is about Guy Fawkes and Robert Catesby and their determination to rid England of the "protestant menace". It was written By Kit Harrington a/k/a/ John Snow, the King in the North. Strictly action no unnecessary naked women. I watched it all in one afternoon.
I love me some Derek Ryddel and he does a great James I

It's funny everybody wanted to be close to the seat of power whether English, French or Russian. Not me. I would have had no desire, whatsoever,to have gotten mixed up in all that palace intrigue, back biting, spying, double teaming, etc.
Cromwell, proves that point. Wish they would bring that show back for part 2
I know how it turns out, but, I love to see how it's acted out and how close they stay to the actual facts.
Really, they don't have to frost it up the truth is more then enough.

@Margo Channing Watched it, loved it!
Kit Harrington is related I think to the character he portrays. Loved Liv Tyler.
