Martha Stewart/Mt. Sinai Medical Care for Olders

Kudos!!!

On Wednesday, June 26, Martha Stewart together with Mount Sinai Health System, announced the expansion of their highly successful model of medical care for older adults.

'My partnership with the Mount Sinai Health System continues to evolve as we expand services of the Martha Stewart Center for Living to downtown Manhattan, where the needs of older adults are currently underserved,' said the culinary queen.

'From now until 2030, 10,000 baby boomers will turn 65 each day. This is the perfect time for leading academic medical centers and philanthropists to partner in improving care for this population and their parents.

'Below 14th street there are more people above the age of 65 than above 14th street,' shared Martha. 'That's why Mount Sinai built a whole new facility in Union Square.'

'We are honored to once again collaborate with Martha Stewart and bring proven high-quality care to older adults in downtown Manhattan,' said Jeremy Boal, MD, President of Mount Sinai Downtown, Executive Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer of the Mount Sinai Health System, and Geriatrician.

The center is focused on enabling older adults to live healthy and more engaged lives, by offering full-service, comprehensive care that includes access to specialist physicians and holistic living services such as tai chi, yoga, music therapy, nutrition planning, and fall prevention programs.

'The gist of the hospital is to not age but to live better,' said the business woman and television personality.

The establishment opens just in time, as Martha points out that in 10 more years, there are going to be more people over 65 in America than under 18.

Branching out: 'My partnership with the Mount Sinai Health System continues to evolve as we expand services of the Martha Stewart Center for Living to downtown Manhattan,' said Martha

I think it is great when people who have been blessed with much, choose to give back.

Choose being the operative word.

Good going, Martha.  This is a good thing.

What did Martha do to help Mt. Sinai?  Donate $10 million?  Or lend her name for promotional purposes, as she does with Macy's Home Collection?

Obviously, I'm a little skeptical.  Is the collaboration "just in time" for aging New Yorkers?  Or "just in time" for Mt. Sinai's parent organizations, who hope to make a lot of money thanks to aging New Yorkers?

I love Martha, but am a cynic when it comes to our healthcare system.

Re: Martha Stewart/Mt. Sinai Medical Care for Olders

In 2006, Stewart donated $5 million to found The Martha Stewart Center for Living at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. Dedicated to geriatric care, or “successful aging” as Stewart so eloquently puts it, the Center aims to innovate how older Americans access healthcare resources today. And Stewart sees herself charged with a clear mission: “To create a prototypical system by which all Americans deal with the aging population,” described Stewart. “This is an area where there is a huge sense of urgency, but urgency doesn’t necessarily match the public focus.”

What a wonderful venture she is in.  And so needed by this country.  Bravo Martha!

She did her first one when her aging Mother died. She said everyone should have a place to go and to help the aging. This was awhile ago. Glad to see she is still doing more.
