In the last year I have noticed a number of restaurants went with vinyl planking floors. All I can say is that the floors look horrible: dust, dirt and debris seem to collect and remain in the grooves. It's not very appetizing in the least.
Looks-wise, they look like fake wood planks and I would bet the owners will be installing something more functional.
My kitchen and great room floors, old as they are, simply gleam and look great.
As for house hunting, when we are looking at real estate / condos or townhouses in Florida, we're not interested in hardwood and its upkeep. Obviously, a plank floor would be a turn-off also.
Sheet vinyl may have one seam, usually in an out of the way place, but vinyl planking has many. Keeping those seams clean at any age would be a job. At 80, it's worse !
There is a risk and a reward: depends on the buyers !
