Re: Man it's windy today 40 mph

@goldensrbest

I hope we get the power back soon, too!  It's suppose to get down to the teens tonight but tg I have a generator. At least I won't freeze to death.

There was a reported 108mph wind gust here somewhere in the city. I don't know how fast the wind was blowing on my property but thankfully all of my trees are still standing. I've got parts of my fence blown over and a few large tree limbs laying on the ground. I'm thankful that's all it is.

I'm still w/o power so I'm running a gas generator to get heat and the internet. No hot water or fridge...food is spoiled in there I'm sure by now. Hopefully the power will be back tomorrow, they are telling us. I'm not going to hold my breath.

@SilleeMee  Thinking of you here.  What type of heat do your run off a gas generator?  Do you have enough gas?  That sounds just terribleWoman Sad, please let us know how you're doing.

@decaf

Thanks!

I have two large infrared heaters (LifeSmart brand). I just ran long extension cords to the gas generator. That generator can handle the high wattage needed to run those heaters plus some other things I have hooked up to the generator, for instance my internet wi-fi router and also my laptop.  I can recharge my cell phone and flashlights using the generator where I have an electrical strip (the long thing with places to plug electrical things into) so I don't have to run to my car to recharge my phone there.

That generator runs full blast for 8 hours straight on 3 gallons of gasoline. I had to run it for a full 8 hours to get my house warm enough to feel comfortable, about 55 degrees, then shut it off for a few hours and refilled the gas tank after which I ran the generator again in the early evening for about 4 hours before bedtime to get my house warm again.

It was a terrible experience, you're right about that. Thankfully everything is okay now. We had our power restored early this morning while I was asleep. Now I have to fix my broken fence so the dog will be okay.

Thanks for asking!Woman Happy

Me, too!! @dancingwoman WHEW!

I've already ordered a gasoline generator for myself (inverter type from Amazon). That windstorm was a wake-up call for me and for some of my close neighbors, they told me. I plan on being more prepared for the next one b/c I know that storm won't be the last.

Yes, I did. I also covered her body with a Berkshire Fluffie throw b/c she needed it. It was very cold in my house for a couple of days, down to about 38' on the second morning of the outage. Thank heavens we got power now b/c it's only 8' outside now.Smiley Surprised

Re: Man it's windy today 40 mph

@SilleeMee  If our electricity goes out we have no water as we live out of town..and have a well..we keep some jugs filled with water in case of an outage and have a pond out back..a few inches of ice now but can break it and bring in buckets to flush...

Heat wouldn't be a problem.. I guess in the winter the food can be put in ice chests outside...but we do cook with electricity...I guess we'd use the grill..

We sure rely on power for a lot for our daily lives..once you start to think about it..that's for sure....

Have you had extended outages before?...DW

Re: Man it's windy today 40 mph

@dancingwoman

I've never experienced more than a 6-hour electrical outage in all my 50+ years of living here. Most of the outages around town were caused from fallen trees on power lines in the older parts of town where the trees have gotten big and where the power lines are all above ground on poles. The newer parts of town don't have large trees and their utilities are all underground so they don't have outages unless there's something wrong down along the power grid which can happen when a car crashes into a utility box or a pole down the line is taken down by wind or by vehicle. It's not too common for that to happen but trees falling is too common all year long unfortunately. Oh the woes of living in an aging part of town.

We are south of you, (in Texas) and just now getting the thunder and the rain....CPSEnergy predicts the 40MPH will hit us soon and may result in some power outages..........Keeping my fingers crossed that doesnt happen.... WISHING EVERYONE IN THE MIDST OF THIS STORM SAFETY
