Considering the volume of mail  they get  each day, I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often

Exactly.  I've had that happen, but only a couple of times in all the years I've been receiving mail.  Sometimes envelopes get caught in a machine or something else goes wrong.  I don't think it's a big deal, and I agree that it's pretty amazing it doesn't happen much more frequently.

I also don't understand why the OP doesn't just re-send the card along with a note explaining what happened.  This may be an "old friend", but certainly not a close friend.  If I just realized that I hadn't heard from someone in over two years, I'm not sure I would consider that friend to be someone near and dear to me -  or someone who cared all that much about staying in contact.  And it sounds as though this friend didn't send a Christmas card to the OP.  So I'm not really understanding all the angst.

If the friend receives the card (with accompanying note) a few weeks after Christmas, I'm sure no harm will be done.  I would just re-send it.

Re: Mail delivery...and an old friend

I've had trouble with my mail going to another house......and they don't have the courtesy to bring it over...........so, I now pay everything online.    Which was a difficult decision for me.......

Re: Mail delivery...and an old friend

Just last week, I was at my sister house when the mail was delivered.  My sister has a slot in the door where the mail is inserted and it lands on the floor inside.  I picked it up for her and put it on her table

When she quickly glanced at her mail there was an envelope addressed to a local butcher shop in another town.  The return address showed it was sent from NJ to PA and  my sister knew the sender.  She graduated from HS with her.

I had to drive right by the butcher shop that day to pick up my granddaughter from school, so I delivered the envelope to the shop.

The shop owner was stunned.  That envelope must have been stuck to something, because the only thing that was delivered right was the state.  The owner said is was a check for meat he overnighted to a customer in NJ.

With the millions of pieces of mail that are sent, I'll bet this happens a lot.  I wish Our mail could talk and tell the story of their travels.
