Yes, I do this! I take all my mail to my utility room when I first bring it into the house. My paper recycling bin is in there. Anything I obviously don't want, gets tossed into the bin right away. Magazines have so much junk in them, but a lot of catalogs (that are ones I like) also have extra inserts in them.

ripout ads?.....never......i like to pass them along to others intact. inserts that fall out go into the recycling bin. i LIKE the perfume samples so i always open those to smell and/or test on my wrists.

I don't buy magazines anymore because they're nothing but ads and eventually the magazine's articles can be read online for free. I wouldn't pay for a magazine nor would I bother to read ads or waste time to rip them out.

First thing, I have to rip out all the cardboard inserts .... AND the perfume sample pages ... usually, the perfume STINKS.

On 4/6/2015 occasional rain said: No, but I get rid of the stinky perfume inserts first.
Oh my gosh, Yes! Those things are terrible. I can't even place them in the paper recycling box we have indoors. I have to walk them straight outdoors to the paper recycling bin. They are truly a pain in the neck.

Yes, I tear them out as I go along. They keep the pages from laying flat as I am reading. Then they go in the recycle bin.
Magazines are my treat. I keep them in my car and read them when I'm waiting or I love to go into a fast food type place where it doesn't matter if you are taking up the booth. I'll just order coffee or something light and enjoy my magazines.

Why do you do it? Not being snarky, just curious about the logic behind it. I've never thought of tearing ads out, although magazines like In Style could use thinning I suppose.

Funny you mentioned this OP. My mom always did this. Thanks for the memory I had forgotten.
