Companies will reduce staff and increase profits - that's the bottom line now.

Macy's has said their sales and profit forecasts for 2014 are up...so they lay off workers.

And their stock then goes up.

Companies are being rewarded by stockholders for laying off people - even when times and profits are good for them.

No wonder the middle class is shrinking!

Many of the jobs being lost are middle level managers and buyers - I think they are only closing a handful of stores.

That's the way of big business, maximize the return for the stockholder, nothing else matters. This doesn't relate to Macy's but this was the same situation when I temped at a major Workers Comp carrier from 2007-2009. Multiple departments were outsourced to India & the full-time personnel in those departments were let go. Every single temporary contract was terminated. The company had the most profitable year it had ever had up to that time.Too bad these companies forget that the peons they discard so cavalierly are a major reason for their success.

I think it is the way of time. Our Mall is closing stores left and right. I think online retailing is taking over.

Seems a few of the "upscale" outdoor type malls seem to be flourishing that I know of with higher end stores. Most stores are stand-alone vs. a contained indoor all enclosed facility with multiple levels. These type outdoor stand alone shopping centers are also attracting higher end restaurants vs. the standard food courts offerings seen in indoor malls. Also higher end movie theater with restaurant and bar area seating. Personally, I don't pay the HIGH full prices at those stores and wait for a really good sale. So IF they are depending on me for high profits they are fresh out of luck . . . and I'm not out shopping every weekend like perhaps the young teens and 20-somethings either who like to go shopping, out to eat and a movie more frequently than I do . . . I find it easier to shop online and have UPS or FedEx deliver it to me. Smiley Happy

One of ours is closing (Rochester NY area). It is attached to a mall that failed, so I can't imagine it does well. You can enter the store, but they closed off the entrance to the mall.

When are they going to realize that with no jobs or reduced hours, people won't be able to shop there?

Retailers like Macy's have to rely on people with disposable income in their pockets.

I worked in Rochester 7 years ago...even then the Irondaquoit (spelling) local wasn't well stocked or manned.

At least you have plenty of choices, like Eastview.

Just a guess, but stores like Macy's must be feeling the pinch from online ordering, including QVC and Amazon, and places like Costco, Sephora and Ulta.

I used to get cosmetics from there but I haven't in quite awhile. I did order down pillows from them online last year. That's it.

Macy's is my favorite department store.

LOVE the sales...I just got some Fiesta towels and pasta bowls and a Fiesta holiday butter dish - huge savings. The butter dish was $30, originally $89.

I get Fiestaware, also. Kohl's carries it and you can order from a bigger Kohl's online selection.

They put it on sale every so often and when you couple that with a 30% discount coupon (sent to card holders), it's a pretty good deal.

I just started getting their new Lapis color. I think I paid $29.00 each for a four piece set from Kohl's online. Maybe less, I just remember it was a really good deal and there was free shipping, too, since I ordered four sets.

It's the perfect color to blend in with my Polish stoneware.

Kohl's had place settings last year for 50% off if you bought 4 at a time...then I used a 30% off coupon. 4 settings for $66 dollars!

But I thought the economy was improving....

Oh wait, I forgot, according to NP - more unemployment payments will improve things. That's the ticket. Who needs jobs, what we need is more government help - like in all the other "civilized" countries.
