I've mostly ignored Macy's since they bought out Rich's, a local institution here in Georgia, and then they really did some damage. They kept both stores going in a lot of malls, and then they closed one store, changed the Rich's name to Macy's, and they said it was all about consolidating the buying power and some rot. The Pink Pig ride, the Christmas tree lighting, the big store downtown that was imploded...what a mess. The downtown Atlanta Macy's even closed off some of the floors and turned it into office space.

Stuff Macy's!

ITA. Phooey on Macy's.

How did Macy's over extend themselves, shama?

I guess I'm just prejudiced against Macy's. I never liked them. I would walk into their stores in LA, and they were crowded and junky. I much preferred the May Co. Stores which were a lot nicer, and I've never forgiven them for turning Marshall Field's, a Chicago institution, into a Macy's. I read financial reports too, and they say that department stores are struggling. Saying that Macy's over-extended itself is my personal opinion, but they spent beaucoup bucks on the May stores, and despite their positive press, I'm not so sure they've recovered.

Ahh, I see. Thank you. I don't have much choice in my neck of the woods in their price ranges, so maybe I've just not seen competition that's doing it better.

Here's something to think about though. Macy's is a real innovator in telling vendors what they want at a certain price point. Instead of going for quality and trying to work out a great price, they say we want item X--a t shirt for example--for price Y. Then it's up to the vendor to meet that price, and they'll do it by cutting the quality of the fabric, the type of stitching they do, the type of thread they use...and so on. This is one of the big reasons why quality is disappearing across the board regardless of the price point. Even luxury goods aren't what they once were.

Yes, closing Macy's Jamestown Mall store. (St. Louis County)

We always shop at the "South County" or "West County". Is this one of those stores? Thanks

Some department stores (not necessarily M*cy's) should hire young adults to 'pick up' clothing, empty boxes, etc., off of the floor, especially during the holiday season. I've heard that a few stores (don't recall which ones) were very lax in this matter during the holidays.

'More or less', 'Right or wrong', 'In general', and 'Just thinking out loud ' (as usual).

Are the 2,500 being laid off just the extra Christmas hires? {#emotions_dlg.blink}

According to the article, they are mid level managers.

They are closing 5 stores and opening more than that.

That's sad.
