It has nothing to do with Macy's, but I can understand why you approve of non-related pot stirring.
Macy's situation has nothing to do with the economy?
And these are your facts?
If you took the time to read the statement they put out...you will see there are very profitable...sales are going great and have been great for the last 4 years. They are cutting jobs to grow profits. Their stock jumped 7% on the news.
This is not a company facing financial difficulties...far from it. They are closing 5 stores but with the new stores they are adding, they will have MORE locations in 2014. They are shedding employees to increase the value of their stock.
Check out WSJ, NYT, Market Watch and read the company's statement...here is just a small section:
"Our company has significantly increased sales and profitability over the past four years, and we have created a culture of growth at Macy's, Inc. We began five years ago with a set of business strategies that were largely untested by a national retailer of our size and scope. As the success of these strategies has unfolded, we have identified some specific areas where we can improve our efficiency without compromising our effectiveness in serving the evolving needs of our customers," said Terry J. Lundgren, Macy's, Inc. chairman, president and chief executive officer.

Thank you for taking the time to spell it out. I lose patience with those who can't be bothered to read reports and data on their own.

They are reassessing their business plan. This is normal for businesses, and I'm surprised that the free enterprise private economy crowd doesn't get this.
That's exactly what I said, too!

Hi MK
The headline: "Macy's to lay off 2500, close stores" is somewhat deceptive.
Headers like that just add to doom and gloom...their stock went up 7% and they are adding stores - now that would have been a better headline!

(I often recall the Pavlov experiment)............Explaining: I'm glad, so far, for about four or five Sundays, that they have removed the fragrance strip samples from their Sunday newspaper brochure/ads. Seems as though whenever I (and several neighbors) received those ads, we had to use gloves/tissues to dump them into the garbage. The odor from a variety and combination of fragrances in the sample strips in their brochure smelled like fly spray. Ugh. It's easy to associate M*cy's with that odor (after years of receiving/smelling their advertisements). So, finally, now, and for these past few weeks, we are able to actually view their brochure advertisement pages and actually go into the store and take advantage of their featured sales/items. I love Macy's, BTW.

I love Macy's too, even though mine looks like a thrift shop more often than not. It's probably because they are under staffed, based on this info. It may also be due to the clientele, not sure.
They ask for feedback via email regularly, and I give it to them.
Honestly. I think it is great that they are listening. Now if they could only spruce up the "disgusting" BR's, I'd be content.
I do love them, because they still manage a variety of price ranges, and less so styles ... but good enough. I would be very disappointed if they closed the one near me., but very happy if they dispensed with the "coupon" BS. I hate that.

How did Macy's over extend themselves, shama?

I've mostly ignored Macy's since they bought out Rich's, a local institution here in Georgia, and then they really did some damage. They kept both stores going in a lot of malls, and then they closed one store, changed the Rich's name to Macy's, and they said it was all about consolidating the buying power and some rot. The Pink Pig ride, the Christmas tree lighting, the big store downtown that was imploded...what a mess. The downtown Atlanta Macy's even closed off some of the floors and turned it into office space.
Stuff Macy's!

I guess I'm just prejudiced against Macy's. I never liked them. I would walk into their stores in LA, and they were crowded and junky. I much preferred the May Co. Stores which were a lot nicer, and I've never forgiven them for turning Marshall Field's, a Chicago institution, into a Macy's. I read financial reports too, and they say that department stores are struggling. Saying that Macy's over-extended itself is my personal opinion, but they spent beaucoup bucks on the May stores, and despite their positive press, I'm not so sure they've recovered.
