The other day I was in Radio Shack. The young man working there told me and DH that some of the Radio Shacks are closing for lack of sales. This particular store will remain open because it still operates in the black, but a lot of people are going to lose their job. This makes me sad for them.

I like Macy's and I hate to see anyone lose their job, but if the money isn't coming in to meet with payroll, what else can a business do but shut it's doors?

We have a couple of well known other stores closing here, too, much smaller than Macy's.

The items they sell are way overpriced and I can almost always get them online for a lot less, especially if they're on Amazon.

Those who are always praising a market ruled by good old American capitalism need to realize that shopping habits are changing. Why go to Macy's for something like big brand name cosmetics when you can get the same thing at Sephora or Ulta at discount prices and sometimes with free shipping? The same holds true for many other products Macy's sells.

Our Macy's has a MAC Pro counter. I love it! Why go online when I can walk in and buy what I want? I can use the product right there and see it in person, plus get a real person to help me if I need it. I guess this can really be argued both ways.

I just hate to think about anyone losing their job.

It's good to see you posting, Noel. I hope your feeling good these days.

Noel, the FACTS are that people are still losing jobs like crazy. Everyone knows it. It's the elephant in the room.

It has nothing to do with Macy's, but I can understand why you approve of non-related pot stirring.

Macy's situation has nothing to do with the economy?

And these are your facts?

We recently had an entire supermarket chain pull out of southern NH. Thousands lost their jobs, and it had nothing to do with approving of pot-stirring. It is a FACT of this bad economy and it does no good to deny that it's happening.

Yes especially when they are constantly telling us how much they care about the poor and unemployed.

Thanks, rondell Smile

I agree with you that there are times when you want to see and feel, check it out in person. I always do when I buy something like comforters, sheets and towels.

Love MAC! I get it at Nordstrom's... love the people they have selling it.

And I agree with you about hating to see people lose their jobs, although I suspect there will be some turnover because of shopping online and discount stores. Shopping is changing a lot, we saw that play out in spades over the past holiday season.

Hope you are having a Happy New Year!

Noel, I'm having a great year so far, thank the Lord. I pray your health holds up for you! I know you've struggled a time or two with it, and that isn't fun. I hope your day goes well. {#emotions_dlg.wub}

My Radio Shack where I live (just opened about 2 years ago) has been struggling from the beginning. They will be closing at the end of March. My closest Macy's is just awful. Didn't purchase anything from them this Christmas.

If you took the time to read the statement they put out...you will see there are very profitable...sales are going great and have been great for the last 4 years. They are cutting jobs to grow profits. Their stock jumped 7% on the news.

This is not a company facing financial difficulties...far from it. They are closing 5 stores but with the new stores they are adding, they will have MORE locations in 2014. They are shedding employees to increase the value of their stock.

Check out WSJ, NYT, Market Watch and read the company's statement...here is just a small section:

"Our company has significantly increased sales and profitability over the past four years, and we have created a culture of growth at Macy's, Inc. We began five years ago with a set of business strategies that were largely untested by a national retailer of our size and scope. As the success of these strategies has unfolded, we have identified some specific areas where we can improve our efficiency without compromising our effectiveness in serving the evolving needs of our customers," said Terry J. Lundgren, Macy's, Inc. chairman, president and chief executive officer.

Whoa, wait just a cotton pickin' minute here.....

Last week we were being told during the debate over whether to extend unemployment benefits that they should NOT be extended, because, according to Congressional Republicans and pundits, there are "plenty" of jobs available, and these people are just lazy, because they would rather receive the benefits than find a job. Even if they have to take a job for less money or change careers.

I heard this many times from all of the Opinionators (Shannity being one) on FNN. "There are a lot of jobs, and not enough people to fill them."

So which is it? You can't say one week that there are plenty of jobs and people are lazy, and the next week that the economy is failing and people are losing jobs.

As far as Macy's, they closed five stores and are opening eight.

They are reassessing their business plan. This is normal for businesses, and I'm surprised that the free enterprise private economy crowd doesn't get this.
