Oh wait, I forgot, according to NP - more unemployment payments will improve things. That's the ticket. Who needs jobs, what we need is more government help - like in all the other "civilized" countries.
Dagna -
Did you read the story?
Macy's had a great year and they are predicting an even better 2014. They didn't lay these people off due to financial losses. They did it to raise the stock prices, which jumped 7% on the news.

LOVE the sales...I just got some Fiesta towels and pasta bowls and a Fiesta holiday butter dish - huge savings. The butter dish was $30, originally $89.

I get Fiestaware, also. Kohl's carries it and you can order from a bigger Kohl's online selection.
They put it on sale every so often and when you couple that with a 30% discount coupon (sent to card holders), it's a pretty good deal.
I just started getting their new Lapis color. I think I paid $29.00 each for a four piece set from Kohl's online. Maybe less, I just remember it was a really good deal and there was free shipping, too, since I ordered four sets.
It's the perfect color to blend in with my Polish stoneware.
Kohl's had place settings last year for 50% off if you bought 4 at a time...then I used a 30% off coupon. 4 settings for $66 dollars!
Love the new Lapis. Since New China or whatever it was called closed shop online . . . I now order from Kohl's. I think last count I'm up to 16 colors. So pretty in the cabinets. Like the new linens and kitchen towels etc. too.

I worked in Rochester 7 years ago...even then the Irondaquoit (spelling) local wasn't well stocked or manned.
At least you have plenty of choices, like Eastview.
I hear you. Eastview is the best. They have expanded recently, too.
Irondequoit Mall was a big civic planning mistake. And an expensive one, too. After Macy's goes, I think it will only have Sears, and I am sure they will be gone soon, too.

You might try reading about the facts before you pull one like that out of thin air.

Noel, the FACTS are that people are still losing jobs like crazy. Everyone knows it. It's the elephant in the room.

It has nothing to do with Macy's, but I can understand why you approve of non-related pot stirring.

The other day I was in Radio Shack. The young man working there told me and DH that some of the Radio Shacks are closing for lack of sales. This particular store will remain open because it still operates in the black, but a lot of people are going to lose their job. This makes me sad for them.
I like Macy's and I hate to see anyone lose their job, but if the money isn't coming in to meet with payroll, what else can a business do but shut it's doors?

Macy's situation has nothing to do with the economy?
And these are your facts?

We have a couple of well known other stores closing here, too, much smaller than Macy's.
The items they sell are way overpriced and I can almost always get them online for a lot less, especially if they're on Amazon.
Those who are always praising a market ruled by good old American capitalism need to realize that shopping habits are changing. Why go to Macy's for something like big brand name cosmetics when you can get the same thing at Sephora or Ulta at discount prices and sometimes with free shipping? The same holds true for many other products Macy's sells.
