I was wondering if the wooden escalator was still up an running.....what childhood memories of that store though and the wooden escalator!
@Luvitorleaveit1 Lord and Taylor has closed
I know L&T closed. I am still mourning the closure.
@Luvitorleaveit1 That was also the best Lord and Taylor I ever shopped in.
I liked the L&T in the city, but I will never stop mourning "my" L&T in Eastchester / Scarsdale. I went there at least once a week. They still haven't filled the entire building so it just sits there calling me. 😿

You can stand at the bottom of those wooden escalators and imagine the ladies in long swirling skirts going upstairs and during every other fashion period from then until now. The store at Christmas is the most beautiful of any I've seen and a "have to" for children !! The most FABULOUS Santa you will experience and always remember. It is absolutely the Miracle on 34th Street Christmas store. I have so many wonderful memories of Christmas in New York and Macys is my first stop. I miss it all !!
You described my perfect memory of Macy's and my favorite movie all time is Miracle on 34th St. 🩷

When my kids were small, every year they had "Breakfast w/Santa" at the 34th St Macy's.

I couldn't believe when they closed the Lord and Taylor stores. There was a beautiful one in Aventura Florida that Mom and I would go to every weekend.

Yes, shopping in brick and mortar stores is much more than just spending money like we do online!
The racks of pretty clothes to search, the welcoming smile of the salesclerk, the piped-in music, the lovely store decor, the free perfume samples, the large tri-fold mirrors in the dressing rooms, and sometimes, a delicious lunch in the store restaurant.
So glad we still have some terrific stores in our area, and some fabulous malls!
BTW, I was up at the NY Macys's right before Thanksgiving last year, and it was already decorated for the holidays. NY city is just a special place to shop and visit during the Christmas season!

they are so lucky the Macys is t still there. I haven't been there, but heard about it. What a treasure! California is such a new State compared to back East. We havent any stores like that anymore that I know of! The great ones we had were destroyed. By earthquake, or weakened, repaired and then razed. One of the grandest of all was the great City Of Paris dept store in San Francisco! erected @ 1850 and closed 1972. It was modeled after one on Paris. Ours had this huge dome, and had an over 50 foot tall decorated tree at Christmas, with a glass dome at too that opened. The tree people came from all over the state to view. I remember my aunt bought me aChina set there for my wedding in 1967. At the time it was beyond my pay grade, lol!
ETA I believe Neiman Marcus is in part of the spot, and preserved the dome.

I also spent too much time and money at that particular L&T. Loved their shoe department!

are these the wooden escalators? Omg, how cool I was trying to imagine them and then found these. They must be a lot of work to maintain!

Years ago when they said that they were going to remodel the store I had hoped that they were going to keep the old wooden escalators. I was happy to see that they did keep them on the upper floors since it's a part of their history.
It's such a beautiful store particularly at Christmas time.
