I took a trip to Mackinac Island (stayed at the GH), and the UP, last year
A day and a half is not much time to allow yourself to relax and feel the ambiance of the island . If you can, I would suggest a two night stay, just to relax and experience the inn and island.
This is what I enjoyed the most:
Bicycling in the morning on a paved path, around the island, stopping at various points to enjoy the shoreland, the scenic vantage points and being under your own power, experiencing a lovely island at your own pace.
Golf in the afternoon.
After golf, cocktails on the verandah (do not miss!) Sit in the rocking chairs and have someone bring you something to sip and enjoy the winding down of the day. It is an experience that will allow you to transcend back to a different era. I loved the porch!
We viewed Pictured Rocks, two ways. In the morning, we hiked in the park, out to the rocks.. In the afternoon, we took the sunset cruise (sun shines on the rocks and makes them glow). As far as I am concerned, it is one of the least known wonders of the world. Absolutely stunning! However, it is a ride from Mackinac Island!
We stayed two nights in the UP, in Curtis, at Chamberlain's Old Forest Inn.
It made it easier for us to go to Pictured Rocks and Tahquamenon Falls (a train takes you through field and forest, then a boat takes you down the river to a beautiful falls). The inn was the gathering place of the town. On Saturday night, we sat in the dining room (with everyone else from Curtis
) had a fabulous meal and sang songs, danced and enjoyed the local band. It was a warm and friendly place!
Hope you have as much fun as I did in lovely Michigan!

@rrpell Thanks for your detailed response. Unfortunately, we're on a time schedule and can't stay the second night. I know once we get there, I'll wish we were able to. We'll just have to try to fit in as much as we can. Maybe this time we'll just get a taste and we can plan a longer visit another time.

@rrpell I love Chamberlin's. My parents lived in Curtis, MI so when we went to visit them it often meant a meal at the Inn. It's in such a peaceful setting and the food is tasty.

@JeanLouiseFinch If you're going on the Pictured Rocks boat tour you will definitely have to cross the Mighty Mac and then drive a couple of hours. It is a must see if you're in the area. While you're in the Munising area I suggest either getting a pasty or eating at the Dogpatch restaurant.

Only one grocery in town when we went. Good place for writers in the winter. Only ferries that come over are supply boats after Oct think it is.

I've been there, but it was @ 10 years ago.
@Snowpuppy has given you some great ideas.
*** If you are sensitive to horse scent you might not care for Charleston or NO either.
