Re: MOUNT EVEREST AND THE PEOPLE WHO CLIMB IT

@SoCal Bred ,  and @just bee ,  the achievements of those climbers you reference--  outstanding!  I marvel at them all.

@monicakm ,  I'm so sorry that your MS has had that effect on your reading-- what a blow.  Hoping that in addition to the sweet help of your husband, you can listen to audible books. Am sure that that would be a bit of an adjustment though.

@World Traveler ,  that's so interesting, imagine needing oxygen just to sleep in Tibet b/c it is so high up!

@spiderw ,  good for you!   I've heard that that Acadia National Park is beautiful.  What wonderful views you must have had after climbing.

Just think at the highest peak you are at the altitude of a jet liner

Jets cruise at about 35,000 feet, some higher.

well the highest peak is 29,000, so pretty darn close!!!!! It still floors me to think of being that high out in the open like that.....Amazing!!! I remember reading it somewhere that it was close to the altitude of a plane...

Re: MOUNT EVEREST AND THE PEOPLE WHO CLIMB IT

@Oznell  :  "Into Thin Air" by Jon Krakauer is one of my favorite books.  What a ride!  The book was an eye-opener on a subject that I knew nothing about -- high-altitude mountain climbing and the people who choose to do it.  It is a fascinating, entertaining, absorbing subject.

Also really liked the 1998 IMAX Everest documentary that was filmed on Mount Everest that same May 1996 season by climber, director, cinematographer David Breashears (I'm not referring to the 2015 "Everest" movie, which I haven't seen).

Thanks for the pointer to the video Climbing Mount Everest-The Descent by Ryan Mitchell, watched that and some of his other videos.

I think I may have seen that IMAX movie years ago when I chaperoned a field trip for one of my kids.

Re: MOUNT EVEREST AND THE PEOPLE WHO CLIMB IT

A very, very dear family friend of ours lost their son in an ice climbing accident several years ago. He loved mountain climbing and wanted to go to Mount Everest. He and his father had already climbed Mt. St. Helen, dad loved the sport but not ice climbing. Christian was such a bright star and full of life - I just know he is at the top of Mount Everest. . . .
