I went to England in 2008 and my SIL took us about an hour north of London and we were sightseeing Oxford and other places. We were in a charming town by a little stream on a hill where my SIL said this is where Mary Queen of Scots was killed. There was a very small plaque confirming this. Struck me odd at the time how such a random spot and a small plaque.

@Nancy Drew,  you made an interesting point -- that sometimes events that are so momentous can occur in settings that are seemingly so ordinary and mundane....

@Oznell I think it was all part of the palace intrigue duplicitous on everyone's part.  I don't accept the fact that Mary committted treason...I think the question is open.  Everyone told Mary not to go to England but, alas, she did not listen.

Fascinating, @tobes , that even these hundreds of years later, there are all these different historical perspectives on the events....  love hearing all the viewpoints.

@Oznell Have you read the Antonia Fraser biography of Mary Queen of Scots... very interesting read.  Antonia has written bios of all English kings and queens starting with Henry VII ....good to read i order.
