Re: MAJOR POWER OUTAGES IN SF AND POSSIBLY TWO OTHER AREAS

Thanks @Drythe

It seems slim to me, too. Any one of them going down would be major.

I lost power this morning and it was quite the job getting to work with all the traffic lights out, but they were on when I got about 90% there and my office has had power.  I saw that 15,000 of 95,000 had power restored and hope I have it back when I get home!!

Hi @sueinsf

The local news showed photos of Market street looking like a parking lot, bumper to bumper, at a standstill.

I hope your lights are back on when you get home!

Re: MAJOR POWER OUTAGES IN SF AND POSSIBLY TWO OTHER AREAS

I do know that Con Edison is having their 'outage' season right now and it goes straight through till June (?).

An outage is a planned period of time, when they work on different units, lots of contractors helping, 12 hour shifts, etc.

It's for upkeep purposes.

They call it a 'shutdown' or 'turnaround' in oil refineries.

Not sure if the power plants in CA are doing theirs.

@Noel7 &

 @Poodlepet2

Yes, it certainly would be major.

Seems to me that more redundancy could significantly limit the damage.

Perhaps should have been dealt with.

Re: MAJOR POWER OUTAGES IN SF AND POSSIBLY TWO OTHER AREAS

Do we sit and theorize if it's a conspiracy or a dilapidated infrastructure?  I'm going with dilapidated infrastructure.  It seems that at least once a month (usually Friday), our commuter trains would have an explosion in their generator stations or we would suffer a blackout at dinner time.

@Lucky Charm, the outage was not due to "outage season."  Apparently, a feeder cable under the street supplying power to the subway signal system failed this morning.  Crews are still working on it and will probably do so through the night. Train traffic is bypassing the station where the outage occurred, but everything is back up and running with some delays.  As I said in an earlier post, just another commuting day in NYC.

Major power outage in SF, Manhattan & supposedly LA

This sounds like a test run to me.

Just wait until it happens in July/August, when the the A/Cs are running full tilt and the subways are unbearable without cooling. Not pretty.
