Lunch with the Mescalero Apache

[ Edited ]

Native American Heritage Week is being celebrated this week in our New Mexico Mountain village. Members of the Mescalero Apache tribe were serving lunch at an event sponsored by Eastern New Mexico State. They had an authentic tepee set up outside the main building. Lunch was served. It was a wonderful experience.

I asked the young maidens if I could take a photo. They posed wearing native attire. Today is "Dress in Traditional Attire Day." We may drive out to the reservation this afternoon.

@On It  Thanks for posting! I don't know if I'm more interested in the Native attire or the Indian taco. Haha! That taco looks great!

Both were exciting. The detail on the native attire is more intricate than the photos show. The Indian Fry Bread was the best I have ever eaten. The taco was my husband's. I had the brisket burrito made with fry bread.

Re: Lunch with the Mescalero Apache

@On It   You need to come to Albuquerque and visit the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center.  It's ongoing and they have guided tours ( my mom was a docent), exhibits, dancing, a great store (nice jewelry) and an excellent restaurant.  On one visit I sat down beside a Navajo woman who was weaving a rug and asked about a thousand things about weaving I always wanted to know.

Google their website.

Re: Lunch with the Mescalero Apache

@On It.  Did you know this, The term Apache refers to six major Apache-speaking groups: Chiricahua, Jicarilla, Lipan, Mescalero, Plains Apache, and Western Apache.

The Apache are not Pueblo Indians related to most of our New Mexico Indians. The Jicarilla have their headquarters in Northern NM near the Colorado State line in the town of Dulce.
