'All I know' is that I carry those very small sanitizing wipes packets and use one just after my meal arrives on the table. Just in case I handle a bread roll or two. Lots of germs on menus, chairs, etc. It's just a habit of mine. So far, so good. Knock on wood.

Well. For those of you who are really careful about picking up any germs anywhere, I have to ask...did you have kids??. Because when you have kids, you can try to protect them but they just touch everything, everywhere. And that's not necessarily a bad thing. They need to be exposed to their environments so their immune systems can become healthy fighters.
My granddaughters came into this world 3 months premature and had fragile immune systems at first, but their doctors advised their parents to not be overly protective. They're now 16 month old babies and they just spent some time with me and we paid no attention to germs anywhere we went. We ate out, did not wash anything down, went to the aquarium and many other public places. There is no need for most of us to live in fear of "germs".

I eat out 3-4 times a week and have never done this. I also don't use the wipes at the supermarket! I'm never sick. But...I do get a flu shot every year. I pick my battles.

During cold and flu season, I am more careful and carry sanitizing wipes...the rest of the time I don't....but I have to agree with the OP....I wouldn't let someone stick their fork in my meal for "a taste"

Question, how does one get a bun out of the bread basket without touching the basket or bun???? I must have missed something.
I have been to many luncheons and have never noticed anyone asking others for a bite of their food, but then I am enjoying the people around me more than looking at how or what they are eating. I am 69 years old with good manners and I enjoy life to the fullest. My suggestion to you is lighten up and enjoy life. As for germs, lol, you are in a public place, touching doors, sitting where someone else sat, touching a table most likely wiped by the same towel that was used on every table there, etc. RELAX!!!!

So nice to live in a country where 'To each our own'.
As long as we're not hurting anyone else. Whatever we think makes each of us more comfortable. 'Live and let live'. And so on and so on. (Said in a nice way, and not meant to cause a controversy.)

I once found a live roach in my salad in a restaurant.
For those of you who are afraid of pot luck food, you probably should never eat any food you didn't prepare yourselves. And even then - are you sure the food you buy isn't tainted somehow?
Just saying.

this thread reminded me of a holiday thread that creeps up from time to time. "gifts of homemade food" and how some just throw them right into the trash. ![]()

I'm just curious to know how the OP would pull apart pull apart rolls except with her hands?

I think the big concern is that they touch more than the one roll they take - thus contaminating the lot.
