Re: Lose/Loose-today's mini, unimportant rant

In elementary school the teacher told us you lose and "O" in loose.

I also have a terrible time with affect and effect and have to always remind myself effect is the outcome or result.  I still have a terrible time with it!

Two that drive me crazy:  One is a friend uses "just" instead of "jist";

when people use "squash" instead of "quash".

These threads come up all the time. I'm not a fan of correcting other people because I think it's plain rude.  This is a forum, not a thesis.  I make mistakes on here I don't normally make because I'm going quickly and don't always catch them.

Yes it bugs me but it bugs me more to see other posters correct someone.  And more often than not, the poster doing the correcting is doing it to be snarky.  What I really love is when one poster corrects another's spelling or grammar and their own post is full of mistakes.  LOL

I used to work with a woman, who never hesitated to point out, what she felt were errors in usage and pronunciation.  She seemed to think it was just fine, to do so publicly.

Once in a staff meeting, she was on quite a roll, pointing out mistakes people made during the meeting

She was crushed, when she was called into the managers office, for a little disciplinary chat. She told our manager,, she  thought was being helpful!

It was embarrassing and awkward when  she'd do these things she just never got it!

Lie and lay is another combination often misused.

Lie is to rest or recline.

Lay is to place something or someone.

But, lay is the past tense of lie. (oh, no)  Seriously, who says,

I lay in bed last night.

I have lain in bed for days.

My mother used to correct people in front of others, because she said she thought people would want to know if they were saying or using something incorrectly, and presumably after she told them, they would be grateful and use it correctly forever after.

I knew this wasn't true. Almost no one will change their usage if/when corrected, because they don't care that they are being incorrect, in a nutshell.  They speak and write the way they do because everyone around them is the same, and people would far rather blend in with their peers than stand out. Being comfortable in day to day life is more important to most people than being correct.  And correct as far as what friends, neighbors and family say trumps correct in a textbook. Right or wrong is fairly irrelevant, this just IS.

Ooh, thanks!  Smiley Happy   I have some trouble with lay/lie.  I know that 'lie' is about a person (I'm going to lie down) and 'lay' is a thing but I get all messed up with the past tenses.   I copied this for keepsies!  Smiley Happy

In most cases it is pretty easy to understand the post/message/meaning/intent even when typoes and grammar errors occur.   On a side note: My biggest pet peeve is how to correctly hang toilet paper.   Cat Wink

Using advise when really what someone wants is advice.

I'm with you, OP.  Many people either 1. don't know/didn't learn 2.don't proof their work 3. don't care.  These are not difficult words to learn what they mean and how to use them correctly.

Re: Lose/Loose-today's mini, unimportant rant

What gets me more is the misuse of--

YAY (as in hip hip HOORAY!)

Yeah (which is like agreeing with something, with a little meh mixed in, but can also be a little more exciteable).

Then there's *yea* which is more like yes--or yeah, but I envision you wearing a powdered wig when you post it.
