Looking for advice on how to find descendents of a man.

Any tips would be welcome. All I have is his name and the name of his son. My buddy is hoping the son would have had children. We are hoping to find some long lost relatives of my friend. He is not computer savvy so I have offered help. I am hoping there are some good sites for this kind of research.

Re: Looking for advice on how to find descendents of a man.

My brother had success just this week finding someone he met 25 years ago by simply Google-ing his name. In my genealogy searches, I usually start with census records and branch out. I am also aware there is a telephone directory website where you just type in someone's name and get listings of everyone by that name and where they are located. Having social security numbers are really good, because you can find a person that way as well. Best of luck to you!

FamilySearch.org is free......or at least used to be free! Try there. Ancestry charges a fee but you might be able to get some basic info.

SSDI, the Social Security Death Index will only provide limited info and only if someone has placed a claim for a death benefit. Not everyone qualifies for it.

FindAGrave.com has some gravesites listed along with a bit of family history if it was provided.

You could try back issues of the town's newspapers in their city library.

The telephone directory website RedTop was referring to is anywho.com. I've had a lot of success finding friends and acquaintances there that have been lost to me for decades!

Re: Looking for advice on how to find descendents of a man.

I know a man who has been married at least 8 times and fathered children from all those marriages - then deserted them. Anyway, the kids decided to try and find each other so they started their search on facebook - looking for anyone with their last name. So far they have found 6 of their half siblings and know about 3 more who have not responded to their friend request. So that could be a place to start.

Peoplesmart.com will at least tell you if still alive. All you need is name & city, state, even if they moved a lot. Good luck.
