This is most likely a meat spot. It’s most commonly found by consumers in brown eggs because the egg candling process misses the defect and the egg goes on to packaging.

winner winner chicken dinner..lol. You are absolutely right, this is chalaza. We call it fatty tissue. It is not an imperfection, or a developing embryo. It is not a meat spot, as others have stated, they are dark in color and look like a piece of meat. I own and operate a poultry business and when you candle an egg whether they are white or brown you can see everything inside an egg. Caged hens fed only laying mesh will produce lighter colored yokes, and the yolks can have more a of chance of having big chunks of chalaza...it's because the laying mesh(grain) is factory produced. Free range chickens are usually in large pens and there diet consists of grass, bugs, vegetables, etc etc and will produce darker yellow to gold colored yokes-depending what they munch on...and yes they will also be fed laying mesh, especially in the winter time. It is more important that chickens have plenty of water to drink...or else they won't lay eggs. Hens don't need a rooster to lay eggs-a rooster only plays a part if you want a fertilized egg to produce baby chicks. We use to have caged chickens but now they're free range- penned and also allowed to roam our 12 acres...but they all prefer to roam around the hen house, and our yard and don't venture into the field.
