Ridiculous...I heard the other day we have the highest electric bills in the nation...and one of the worst systems. "(N)Eversource"
The upside...neighbors were outside talking to each other, lol...it felt "quaint."
People were playing board games by candlelight.
We came outside on the deck in the morning to make coffee on the grill...like camping.
Oiy...quaint...but don't bring me back anytime soon.
Sad for Texas right now...we know people there.
I've been fortunate in that I have only gone without power for 3 days following a widespread outage caused by what at the time was termed a "supercell" - straightline winds, but not a tornado - though it certainly looked like tornado damage all over the place. I think they would call it a "derecho" now.
But I also noticed, as what I bolded above, neighbors coming out and visiting each other and helping each other out. As soon as the power came back on, everybody went back inside, just as I was starting to take it in stride and enjoy the feeling of community.
It was warm weather. I would be bananas if I had to go without heat in the winter for very long. I think our nation's aging power grid is what is to blame for this. Our's around here is getting to be close to 100 years old!

For three days last summer. So hot and humid.

4 days a few winters ago. Had to give up and go to DS's house on Day 3. House was just too cold.
Sister & family were w/o power for two weeks after Sandy and another long term power outage after that. No water, as they are on a well, so no pump.
After Sandy BIL was lucky to find a generator.
Prayers for all those in Texas and elsewhere who are really suffering!

about 20 years ago in Seattle a three punch storm... first lots of rain, then 70 mile an hour wind and then an ice storm....
our power was off where I live for 5 days... it was only 40 degrees outside so it was a cold 5 days. People were running out of wood to burn if they had fireplaces... I continued to go to work as where I worked they had power. At least it was warm there... but then I had to go home to a dark cold house.
It was awful. I still remember it... and today we have a Generac generator so that hopefully will not be the case the next time we have such a situation.

3 or 4 days due to an ice storm when I was in high school. Spent 2 nights in a hotel due to loss of power as an adult which prompted us to invest in a whole house automatic generator. Best $$ ever spent.

I think it was 6 or 7 days in the middle of "snowmageddon."
We had no water supply either but had filled the bathtub and had bottled water for our 3 dogs.
We wore all the clothes and coats and blankets we had, told ghost stories, played cards by flashlight.
It was an adventure, but by day 6 I will never forget how great it was to have the electricity back on! It was really cold!
I feel so badly for Texas out there!
That is horrible and the carbon dioxide, awful.
