FUD
Fear, uncertainty and doubt (often shortened to FUD) is a disinformation strategy used in sales, marketing, public relations, talk radio, politics, religious organizations, and propaganda. FUD is generally a strategy to influence perception by disseminating negative and dubious or false information and a manifestation of the appeal to fear.
Every time I complain about the news, commercials or the number of "do you have enough saved for your retirement?" ads and programs, Better-half just says, "FUD."

I haven't watched any news on TV in a very long time. I've always despised local news, & I had zero desire to watch it. It's ALL propaganda, & for me, completely useless.
I got so sick of everything on TV & I got rid of cable....don't have any stations, even local. I only watch dvd's, & it's perfect- I love it.

Thats an excelllent point about not being able to believe what you hear these days....So much is slanted towards a specific agenda depending on the channel You really have to do your own homework and go to several sources and the truth lies somewhere in the middle...that's not good journalism!
@Spurt, many, many people lack the skill or desire to do their own homework.
As for the truth being somewhere in the middle, true in certain areas of the news but not others.
Not only are the attacks on media disruptive but the new norm of making up stuff out of thin air just because one can and because one knows that a portion of the populace will run with it is certainly a frightening new norm that I hope will become an old one very soon.
I'm afraid I disagree that the attacks are unwarranted, @suzyQ3. The media has published an unprecedented number of stories and retractions that illustrate a spectacular confirmation bias that undermine its own credibility.
(Is that the making stuff up out of thin air to which you were referring? If so, I agree wholeheartedly.)
A truthful media is absolutely imperative to American governance. There is nothing wrong with holding it to the high ethical standards which should be an integral part of journalism.
I do agree with you that this trend is part of a frightening new norm, and I too hope it will become an old one very soon.
Hi, @Oostende, nope. :-)

I'm curious. Do you get your news from a source other than TV? if you don't, how do you know "It's all propaganda"?
There is a lot of truthful news out there. You just have to do your own homework to know.

The news isn't there to entertain you. The news is there to inform you so that you can be an informed citizen. That is necessary in a democracy and has always been true. If the news is bad – if there is terrorism, if there are accidents, if someone is murdered – that is news. By definition, news is comprised of those things which are not the norm. If you want to be entertained or fed a diet of honey-coated junk info, why not check out the comics section of the newspaper.

I haven’t watched the news for a long time. I stopped watching because I felt it seldom presented any information I wanted to know about.

It seems a lot of people are upset with the news because it's news they don't want to hear.

^This.
I agree. While some aspects of the news may be unpleasant, basic news broadcasting is there to inform the public. I'd certainly want to know if a tsunami, forest fire, attack on our country, government overthrow or some danger is headed my way.

I think we know this. Most would agree though that the news sensationalizes and embellishes the stories to keep you riveted and then often without warning comes the visuals and the inappropriate details. This is done for ratings and nothing more.

I'm lucky that I don't have those popular cable news talk channels. We know a few of people who are very intertwined with so much back and forth bantering, stress, etc. It's their entire life, it seems. Fortunately, I'm a good listener, and I listen to their many 'sides', opinions, summaries of what they have viewed, and controversies. And in the end, I'm glad that I'm not 'in the mix', so to speak. Sometimes it's better (perhaps healthier) for some people to not have too-too-too much news/controversy/stress/whatever in their lives. We can learn and decide what we can do to benefit ourselves and others by being 'on top' of issues without being 'dragged around' within it. Well, jmo right now. I've been known to change my mind.........
