I haven’t watched the news for a long time.  I stopped watching because I felt it seldom presented any information I wanted to know about.

@ Montana, what information do you want to know about?

 The news isn't there to entertain you. The news is there to inform you so that you can be an informed citizen. That is necessary in a democracy and has always been true. If the news is bad – if there is terrorism, if there are accidents, if someone is murdered – that is news. By definition, news is comprised of those things which are not the norm. If you want to be entertained or fed a diet of honey-coated junk info, why not check out the comics section of the newspaper.

^This.

I agree.  While some aspects of the news may be unpleasant, basic news broadcasting is there to inform the public.  I'd certainly want to know if a tsunami, forest fire, attack on our country, government overthrow or some danger is headed my way.

I think we know this.  Most would agree though that the news sensationalizes and embellishes the stories to keep you riveted and then often without warning comes the visuals and the inappropriate details.  This is done for ratings and nothing more.

@puttypiesmom, you sound like a perfect candidate for reading newspapers.

The videos of packages being stolen are unsettling.  Our packages still are dropped on our front porch, but I was thinking of making different arrangements for deliveries.

@handygal2

A few months ago I went to my primary care doctor and he asked how I'm doing. I told him that all the bad news on tv makes me depressed - and he said he gets depressed also. What these news shows, talk shows and shows like the Housewives don't realize -- is how it affects the viewers. I was always a passive person - and now I actually scream at the tv and wish I had a gun to take them out!!!! Imagine what it does to young people???

Fortunately I grew up many years ago when watching tv was enjoyable!!!!
