@SydneyH .........how does this work? How does scanning the drivers license deter someone?

I think that for the average consumer, these policies will make no difference at all. I remember when people were up in arms about 'the letter' from the Q. I had no idea what they were talking about because I rarely had to return anything and when I did it wasn't often or a lot.

@Imaoldhippie I believe it means they are keeping your information in a data bank regarding returns.
I totally think the retailers need to be able to moniter this situation for people that are excessive returners. Seriously we all have to return items now and then but habitual???? I've heard people actually buy a brand new huge tv just for the superbowl and then return it, now that's ridiculous!!

My MIL worked in a higher-end jewelry store years ago. Men would come in and buy very expensive jewelry for the wives at Christmas...the day after Christmas many of the wives returned the items for cash!

The data is tracked and goes to Loss Prevention at Corporate, those who are returning excessively will no longer be able to do so at any of our 138 stores. A message will pop up at the register advising the Supervisor the return can no longer proceed. Some of our worst offenders used to try to return used and very old merchandise, this will no longer continue.

Tiffany's has a relatively strict policy where a gift recipient must take a merchandise credit even with a receipt. If the husband returned the item and didn't pay cash, we instructed our employees to give the refund in the manner in which it was initially paid for.
I think most jewelry stores now have that policy. Cash isn't given back except through a mail bankcheck refund.
It always floors me when I read reviews of some of the pricier jewelry items on the QVC website where someone posts they are giving it a trial run and wearing it for a few weeks to see if they like it. Once worn, I really think it is there's to keep, unless it is defective.

Limits on returning items aren't really meant for the person who orders something online and occassionally needs to return that item for a legitimate reason. And then there are people who order things, wear them once and then return them. It's not just with online orders, it's also people who buy things in a B&M store for the same purpose.
