RRR...I don't believe an employer can keep a person overtime without pay.

actually, if you are salaried (exempt) they can request you work whatever extended hours they want you to without OT pay. I speak from experience. I was salaried and often worked longer than an 8 hour day plus weekends with no extra pay.

If you are an hourly worker, you MUST be paid for overtime. I think the workers in the original business were hourly.

Are they texting/talking to folks who actually have a job and are working at their workplace? Or are they talking to millions of unemployed folks? Exactly who has the time to text/talk? I don't know of anyone who wants to spend their entire day on the phone/text/etc. It's been said that the youngsters/tweens/teens will have carpel tunnel type of thumb problems by the time they are adults, which means that they possibly won't be able to work at certain jobs/careers.
Believe it or not, I had a lot of clients who preferred to text over any other form of communication.
I am on my computer because I have a client in Philly who only has time to communicate thru e-mails and we send 50 or more back & forth in a day. He has a lot of questions and likes to get answers in writing.
My best client used to work sometimes until 2AM. She told me that some reps returned her texts at that hour. I told her not to expect that from me...I don't have my phone on when I'm sleeping. She said that some reps tell her they sleep with the phone in bed with them!
SO, all these slackers are in the bathroom texting YOU?????
Now we know the root of the problem!
It's all MY fault!
I prefer to actually TALK to people, but many now seem to prefer the texting route.

No true. Some employees are hourly exempt and do not get paid overtime.

Salaried workers don't get paid overtime...at least no one in my company does..we are all salary not hourly....I know some companies give flex time off to salary workers when they work extra hours.

Ha, ha! This reminds me of the elementary/junior high school kids back when I went. They had to have some kind of pass in their hands to go to the bathroom during class. They'd take the pass, but then just meander around the halls, looking into other classrooms at their friends, stop at a water fountain, go to the doors look outside, check out other things, go to the bathroom, come out and meander back to the class the same way.
In other words, they just wanted to get out of the classroom for a bit and wander.
