I may be incorrect, I used to work for a large pharma firm, but if the drug is being approved for a new indication, it may be considered a new drug, therefore, can be sold at the Brand price, not the generic price. Now I may be entirely wrong in what I just stated, just something I'm remembering from my working experience in drug firms.
I think the government should step in and stop this huge pricing of drugs, it's disgraceful. But big pharma says research and development costs are huge therefore the outrageous prices of drugs. I feel especially sad for the elderly.

What you've described has been a common practice in the past, used to delay other companies from copying a drug. Somebody needs to do something to stop these tricks designed to fleece patients.

Yes Noel, you said it better than I did. That's what I meant.

Interesting take son this thread. Hmmmmm. So MANY folks have offspring that chased after educational degrees that someone someplace has to employ them. They require nice salaries and benefits. That has to be generated somewhere. Also those that invest in the stock of the drug companies want heavy dividends. Not to mention the brokers who went to school in business to ask for a nice cut of the money to support their lives and whims. Lots of folks have their hands in the pot. If we are to offer our citizens what they consider decent jobs and salaries we must remember, the money has to come from somewhere. YOU.

You would think this would fall under gauging. Is there any legislation initiated to stop this? Why is it legal if people's life depends on a medication? It seems like this is a scam that could soon get way out of hand. It just makes me really sad to see so many businesses in this country be lost or sold to uncontrollable sources.

Tarceva is another outrageously priced drug. My dad paid over $2000 for 5 pills when he was being treated for lung cancer.
eta:
Some or all forms of Tarceva may become available as generic erlotinib after November 2018, depending on FDA approval and patent expiration.
